Anchoring on the Hudson River?

Going to be hard to sail past bear mountin, close to west point. The river takes a hard turn to the west, and the wind basically stops. No idea how the square riggers sailed this portion, or if they had rowers pull them thru here.

There is a great anchorage just south of croton on the Hudson, it's in half moon bay just northeast of croton point park. It's protected from everywhere except the northwest and there is a state beach right there. The park is also nice to walk around in.

I agree, anchor on the north side of Croton Point. Plenty of room for lots of boats. Don't sail too close to the point though, as there are fish traps. You can land a dinghy on the beach as long as you go well to the side of the swimming area (either side probably but I've always used the east side). It's a reasonable walk to the train station from there if you need to pick up/drop off crew.

There are other anchorages in the area too, I always use activecaptain for this sort of thing.

I have a twin keel sailboat and am planning to travel from Lake Champlain through the Champlain Canal and down the Hudson to NYC this summer. I am hoping to be able to find a good hard/sandy spot to dry out on my keels and let the tide go out (like they commonly do in the UK with twin keel boats). Does anyone know of a good spot along the Hudson River to do this? A shallow (~4 ft) spot during high tide that I could get into, wait for the tide to go out, then rest on my keels during low tide that won't be subjected to big wakes?

I need to leave my boat in the Hudson for up to two weeks. Does anyone know of a reasonable Marina where I can leave the boat for that period? The time frame would be the last week of Sept and the first week of Oct.

Catskill creek marina is open into November. Its the one at the end of the creek by the bridge, not the one at the end by the river. Very deep, 30+'

I know the hideaway marine in Kingston is pretty reasonable, at least compared to the Rondout Yacht Basin, also in Kingston. Saugerties could be a good option too. The farther south you go the more expensive it gets, generally speaking.

Have you considered consulting Active Captain for anchorages and reviews of these anchorages?

For the person looking for a marina to store his boat, Active Captain will be a big help to you also.

Definitely consider Half Moon Bay Marina in Croton on Hudson. We left our boat for a month there last year and it was a great experience. Very low cost and extremely proctected and sheltered.

donot sail so close to mountain. they are like ships with a helluva windshadow. sail opposite side of river from mountain. opposite side of river from tight bends. plan your apex to coincide with full breezes
my uncle sailed his 1903 gaff rigged raceabout to nyc many times. he did not have an engine on his transom-it was a SAILboat. is how i learned to sail. with him on his eleanor.

Did you actually do this in the end? We're planning to go this year (2017) but don't want to get there and then find out they don't allow it during the festival. It looks to be a fine anchorage with easy access to the festival.

I doubt they would prohibit it, although it may be more crowded than usual. Maybe call the Clearwater organization themselves? They will know what it's usually like.

Had an EPIC 4 hour tacking duel southbound
years ago. Beware of the area around the
Tappan Zee bridge. All sorts of unmarked and
unlite construction stuff all about.
There has already been a powerboat fatality.
Surprising amount of Barge traffic.
