Website for your boat?

Hey, I'm thinking about starting a website for my boat. A lot of folks ask me for my website address cuz my boat's rather unique & she has her own fan club, so to speak. So I thought it would be fun to create a site showing all her restoration pics & my adventures at the boat shows & cruising.

Anyway, I'd like to see other boater's sites & recommendations re server/software. I'm not that web-savvy so would need a template but find the big sites like Go Daddy to be rather expensive.

So, any ideas & recommendations? & I'd love to see your websites for inspiration!

That's what we use though there are a number of free blogging sites.

The work is not in setting it up--all of them are simple--it is in generating the content and keeping it current.

We also use wordpress. My problem is remembering to take pictures when we are doing anything.

I use blogger. It is free and way easy... My technically disinterested GF needed a site for her therapy practice. Although Wordpress is a good free program, the learning curve was steeper than she wanted so I started a Weebly site and she was able to take it over with no help from me. I think This Guide to choosing is pretty good.

Thanks for that guide, jkindred. I never heard of Weebly & good to know it's so user friendly. I'll also check out Wordpress.

Can't decide if I should do a blog or not. I'm leaning more toward a site with a gallery. Don't think I want to blog everyday. That sounds like work! I think I can get away with pics & titles like, 'St. Michaels boat show' or 'down rigging in Chestertown' - that sort of thing.

Now, I just have to do the work, but I'll post the link once it's ready... Definitely by Spring! :-) meanwhile, let's see some more links to sites. That's the real inspiration. :-)

There are several photo hosting websites that will allow just that.

You can use a lot of blog-based sites as static sites as well. Wordpress for example, allows you to make "pages" that are static and to set the site url to go to a designated page rather than the blog. That way you don't have to keep up the regular posts but can still have a site with cool bells and whistles and galleries and whatnot.

Here's one I built out of wordpress for a small magazine I work on. T8N Magazine. It's all plugins and free theme stuff. The only issue is that you can't use the plugins on a free wordpress.com site, so you are looking at $6–8/month to host it. But you could definitely do something less gimicky on wordpress.com.

I really like how your site is set-up...very simple and easy to move around. I think that's a similar template I want to try. Thanks for sharing it here. Very cool & inspiring.
