In my research these are the education requirements for TEFL/TESOL

All require NATIVE english (passport from a english speaking country)

China/Taiwan/Thailand/Cambodia usually only require a TESOL Certificate. But this is changing, I think they are going to start requiring a minimum BA degree.

Japan/Korea require BA (any subject) and TESOL Certificate

Middle East: Most countries in the Middle East require a MA (pref in English/Linguistics) and Certificate in TESOL. This area usually pays the most (and is usually tax free).

Latin America: Most require a university degree and TESOL

I'm an ESL teacher and actually pretty high up the totem pole when it comes to experience and pay and such. Even so, I can tell you that you'll want to make sure you already own anything you'll need before starting to teach. This includes the boat, gear, money for a few months provisions, and anything else you may want.

It's an enjoyable profession and it's really not difficult. And if you decide to locate to the Caribbean or Mexico or Central America it can be really fun. You can support yourself living in the location, but don't expect an income that will allow you to improve your situation (thus the have everything first comment).

I wouldn't invest too much money in training as most of the courses don't really teach anything that's not common sense and the pay doesn't increase much with more education.

Now, if I can only find a decent paying job for a few years to buy my boat...I'm right behind ya.

Thanks for the input. I am thinking Gulf Coast & Caribbean. Mexico, CA etc.

I have a BS in Computer Science and will have the TELSOL certificate. I do not have any "Real" teaching experience yet but have run & taught training classes covering new software systems that we installed in the resort/casino where I was IT Manager.

With these qualifications do you think I will be marketable?

As to income, I understand that most of these positions are what I would consider part-time so I will have the option of supplmenting my income with other activities.
