Selling Without a Broker

What problems did you have? I bought 2 boats without brokers ($5,000 to $15,000) and one with ($120,000). All of the transactions went smoothly, although obviously the latter was more complex. In the second case the broker refused the job (same one I bought the $120,000 boat through) because it would be too difficult (for the money)--I listed it on an owner forum and sold it in 2 weeks with no troubles.

What problems have you had sell without a broker that related to not having a broker? Not potential problems. Not marketing problems. Actual transaction problems that using a broker would have solved. There is some paperwork, but so long as you get a certified check, what can go wrong.

Well, a lot depends on your boat & location.If you have a popular model, and want to deal with the wack jobs that come out of the woods from internet advertising, you won't need a broker to give your boat away for you.

There are literally dozens of websites, some "consolidators" in addition to ebay & craigslist. Often you will find a usergroup that allows ads, and has potential buyers waiting.

PS: Don't even think of any form of "Certified Check", they are easily faked and can take several weeks to bounce, after your pride & joy has long disappeared. Wire Transfer or Cash.

True. Thanks. Most likely you would close in a bank, because you would need some things notarized.
