It's really not.
I've had a 36' Coachman fifth wheel with triple slides for the last 15 yrs, as a family of four we lived in it for a yr or two while I re-built the house, and have done some travelling in it, nothing long time though.
To begin with, their are no "anchorages", unless you count the Walmart parking lot. You have to shoe horn your fifth wheel into a tiny space with all the other campers in a campground, and it costs about the same as a motel too.
This is what concerns me about mandatory mooring fields.
Travelling? Well my C3500 Diesel gets maybe about 8 MPG on $4 a gallon Diesel.
plus side, the thing is HUGE compared to most boats

I guess you got me on this one as we only have a boat and I talked not from my experience but rather from what I believe(-d) a camper life to be all about.

Where we are (the EU) it is still OK to take a country road and stop anyplace for a night. In the more policed states the police may ask you to move on but in the less policed ones nobody really cares. So this would be your anchorage.

On the other hand, look at anchorages in the West Indies or in the EU and you will see they are exactly like that cramped camper site full of other camper vans.

Glad to hear your first hand experience; we might stick to two backpacks and a tent then!

Cheers,
b.
