In this area (Southern New England and NY) pump-outs are free. If it is a pump-out boat it is normal to tip the operator $5 or if assisted by a dock-hand in a marina it is also customary to tip.

all bay, a pumpout service here in sin diego on the bay charges 70 dollars to come to your boat and suck out a 5 gallon tank
' more for more fluid . this is a most expensive place to be boating..lol...

You've got it wrong. The reason to tip is based on Karma. In the case of pump-out it makes a shitty job more pleasant.

When you're waiting it can also make a difference whether you're next on the list or last. Same situation with launch operators -- we always tip, and the launch drivers practically fight over who picks us up while other boaters wait.

I had the same list when afew years ago my holding tank had ballooned and I was DESPERATE for a pump out. The Bowen island Pumpout hadn't been working for years, and Coal Harbour could only pump out at HIGH tide (it gets sucked into the municipal system). From the calls I made, there were few operational pumpouts. Cheers,

Pumpouts are free across the bay in Jamestown if you've paid for a mooring.

You can also pump out at the fuel dock for free at many marinas. However, its is considered good form to tip the pump out boat driver if he or she comes out to your boat. During the sailing season most of them are college kids with summer jobs looking to earn a little extra money.
