Sand Crab, maybe I misread your post, and I apologize if I did, but did you just tell me to go run aground?

A christening or renaming ceremony is a great excuse for a party.

Re: Name Change - Folklore and Superstition

Thanks Sand Crab. I'll be sure to BBQ some shell fish while I wait for the tide to float me.

I'm holding a de-naming ceremony next week for my boat. She came without a name on the transom, so I feel it's especially important to follow nautical traditions and heed the relevant folklore. One week thereafter, once I can be certain she has forgotten any name by which she may have been called, I will christen her Sailor's Soul.

Also,

I second Markpierce's comment. Any excuse to have a party is a good excuse

We thought of re naming the boat " Crooked Whore" because she really only takes and really never gives. It's still "EZ Street" however, which is also misleading ha .

Re: Name Change - Folklore and Superstition

I was taught by my father, an old west coast comm. fisherman, that only wooden boats have a soul, and to rename them you must follow very simple but nessasary rituals !! I think I remember them ?? but according to him plastic or metal boats have no soul so you can call whatever you want !! Now don't jump on me Im only repeating what I was told 60 some years ago !! LOL Bob and Connie

Re: Name Change - Folklore and Superstition

Wooden boats have the most beautiful souls. It's in the way they rock. They way they creak and moan. Almost like they sing to their sailor. Steel and plastic each have their own songs.

Steel's is cold and hard. A steel boat needs a warm and caring owner. With one, they will sail forever. Plastic boats are light and jumpy. They need a patient, steady sailor to keep them on course.

I think every boat has a soul, and that soul is fortified by they sailor who commands her.

I know mine does. We have spoken and I told her that if she wants or is in need of a soul, she can have some of mine.

Hence her soon to be name.

Guess you are either superstitious or not. If you are you follow all the "rules", if not just go have a beer afterward as a reward for your trouble and time.
You have oviously not considered the wonerful opportunity for a great party. We did the whole thing with the 'ingot' hurled to the sea for Oden to erase the old name from his ledger, liquor spritzed to the four winds, incantations etc. Fortunately, nobody fell of the boat (on the hard).
