I found that the lazier and less competent they are the more protective they get. The same thing happens at the other extreme of the world spectrum - very successful, hard working, severely policied countries (the US, NZ, AUS, etc).

So to say it is easiest to get work or do things without getting stoned / jailed / extradited in the middle of the pack.

Well, I'm pretty sure it's not going to be straight forward at first. But I just think that with four of us on board, we'll have four times the chance to find something to keep us going.

Nick, Over the years, in all our Travels, the people that make it without a bankroll, are those with a wide array of talents. The more you can do, the better chances you have.
The biggest issue I've ever seen is the people keeping on the move.. and we've fallen into this ourselves at times. You find work, the weather is good, and all is comfortable so we stay, and sometimes longer than we planned.
Its not uncomon to stop somewhere, and find other cruiser that planned on staying a few days and it turned into a few weeks or even a few years..

Dear Nick, Met some guys like you in remote cruising anchorages . They were basically broke and stuck. Their idea of selling their services to other cruisers didn't work too well as most other cruisers were broke too! Specifically the Rio Dulce 10 years ago good luck .

Yeah, I'm well aware that most of us sailor cruisers are D.I.Y. types who have re-built their own boats, like me and can't afford professional help, like me. So many of my tools might get put into storage which will make room for crew in the aft cabin. Something tells me that it might be having four of us, looking to make money, that makes the whole adventure viable. The people I have in mind are er, a creative lot.

I don't mind stopping for a year if the living is good, I just don't want to get bogged down if the living ain't. Thanks though. It's good to know some manage.

I always thought that was called democracy. Some work and then the government takes money from them to give to others who just want to sit around. The Canadian government has been doing this for years.

While we cruised Mexico we knew a couple that bragged about cruising while collecting unemployment. Between the both of them the hard working tax payers were paying for their "vacation". They would tell the story unprompted, as if they are proud of their scam.

There is a name for that, I believe they are called 26 week cruisers or something, cause unemployment lasts that long?

They must have had good jobs to afford to cruise on UI. I don't believe UI is offered to business owners so they had to work for someone.

I'm not sure of the story but perhaps it was a forced vacation (layoff, plant closure, fired). I know that I have been treated to a forced vacation (plant closure in a small town) and I would have happily gone cruising until the economy changed up.

I wouldn't have bragged about it but I wouldn't have been ashamed of it either. Not everybody is an entrepreneur, but that doesn't mean I didn't work for my benefits.

Have run across a few with sham charities too. They seemed to be doing pretty well.
