Re: Make Money While Cruising - List
Hey, I worked in aged care over here in demographically disintegrating Germany, seen what doc's lives are like. I don't regret not trying that career...and I'm surprised more of them aren't self-medicating. Talk about being the meat-in-the-sandwich....

My ex-wife is a medical recruiter for International SOS.
I think the issue is that where they need doctors no one wants to go.
Backcountry clinics, backcountry project sites (think great gorge dam, powerplants etc.) and on-board oil rig platforms.
Usually 6 month+ contracts.
Not too many placements in seaside resorts.

I've been kicking the idea of taking my powertig 185 with me. It would allow me to tig weld stainless and aluminum should the need arise. Never thought about making any money with it. Beer maybe.

I have a Tig 175 amp That I was going to carry with me, I bought a 5000 Watt pure sine invertor for it, But it wont run the welder,
5 inch grinder and my 550 watt drill both at the same time under load, no problems,
You might have to carry a generator to run the Tig,

Re: Make Money While Cruising - List
It would seem that there are many here with the tools and skills to do a variety of boat repair work for less money than by the dealers. I wonder if the site owner cold create an up-dateable resource page where you can give your present position and skills with others to leave comments on the standard of your work (cowboy filter). That way if I ripped a sail I could see if there is anyone close who could fix me up.

In many countries this would amount to advertising illegal activities and not wise. If you are performing repairs for recompense you are taking work from locals and that is seldom viewed as a good thing by governments or the locals.

Does this apply to workers doing work on vessels registered in their own country?
If a working ship sails to another country, the cook/mechanic etc pays tax in his/her own country and does not need a work visa for the work done aboard.
There must be some exemption that allows this to happen. How widely does this apply?

You should be okay in your own country.

I suppose it depends on a countries laws but I was referring to being in a country foreign to you.
Seamen of course work on board there own vessel but they don't go aboard another vessel and work. They probably won't be involved in offloading or loading nor can a foreign vessel transport goods between ports in most countries. Of course all this is dependent on the laws of the country they are entering.

So was I. What I meant was if I am a UK tax payer in the US (for example), do I have to pay tax/have a visa to go work on a UK registered boat floating around the US?
If this boat was a cruise ship for example, the workers don't pay tax in the US and don't need a US working visa to work aboard. Theoretically I could leave my liveaboard and work on the UK cruise ship for a week. How is this different to boarding any UK registered vessel and doing work?
Just a thought ... Fizz

You won't be allowed to legally in the US. It doesn't matter what the flag is on the vessel or where you pay the taxes.

I guess that answers my quandary, I thought for some reason you could if the boat was visiting from the UK. I can only assume then that a UK cruise ship must pay US employee taxes and its employees must have US working visas while passing through US waters?
If this cruise ship visits several countries, would employees need working visa's for every destination?
