Re: Make Money While Cruising - List

"yet China blatantly "
Politics. A number of "Communist" states, infamously including parts of the old USSR, held to the not unlogical belief that intellectual property was the property of The People or The State. Pretty much the same way that in the US, copyrights belong "to the state" for government works. That's why our marine charts can be freely copied (at least, by citizens) while in other places like the UK they are "Crown" copyrights and may not be copied.
From that perspective, we become China, we allow unauthorized copying. Except under our laws, from our point of view, it is legal.

In China...there are problems with legality and also with enforcement. The Q'in ("chin") Empire taught that China was the Middle Kingdom, right under that of the Sun God, and the rest of the world was the Low Kingdom, populated by barbarians hardly above the level of animals. Animals don't have property rights, we agree on that. We only disagree on whether the "western wide-eyed hairy barbarians" are animals or not. So by tradition, you night not cheat your Uncle, but cheating the animals? Really? That's not possible, they're just animals.

Take that tradition and legacy (which is not really so unique or odd compared to some other cultures) and combine it with a little payola...and there's not much anyone can do to motivate these places. You can try to boycott them (that's worked with Cuba, huh?) or you can try to make them valued trade partners (Nixon to China, ahem) but changing cultures and legacies, that's a little slower and harder to do.
Our own tolerance for the importing and selling bit, now that's something we have to own up to. CD's, narcotics...Hey Mister, you want buy Rolix? Fie dollah, fie dollah, special for you!
You know what Pogo had to say about that.

Re: Make Money While Cruising - List

I have thought long and intensely on ways to make a dollar while cruising--and there are many profitable ways to turn a fast buck--but most are illegal and the rest likely to become so.

Years ago photography was a good earner--but thanks to digital file transfers and amateurs that one is no longer reliable.

Copying charts using a wide printer and outdoor inks was a good one, but it is still a copyright breach in most countries, the exception being America.

I have made up equipment that is hard to find from stainless steel or bronze--but again the orders are few and far between and one's designs will certainly be copied if advertised openly. The workshop facilities include welding apparatus anyway--difficult to have aboard and an unacceptable fire risk.

Books--there are plenty of them out there on how to do stuff. Writing scripts, documentary travelogues, television scripts etc can be a good way to live aboard if one knows the industry and has some talent.

The other remarks about China are relevant to America and the rest of the western world--but one can hardly blame the Chinese for taking advantage of a situation where commission agents and money changers of one sort or another are prepared to sell off the heritage and opportunities of its people for a few fast billions. In the Land of Oz the current government wants to sell off Australia's agricultural and mineral assets to China--they are just as slogan-driven and stupid as any of the other potential or current "free Trade" governments abroad on the planet.

There were no socialists or trade unionists among those who set up the WTO (wankers, twits and Off-The-Planet) rules for depleting the national well-being of the western world, ostensibly to get rid of "World Poverty". That was how they slipped it past the populace--but the poor are even poorer and the country that once led the world is now fast becoming an also-ran, while much of its its cash has migrated to China and India while at home jobs are lost and people are losing their homes.

I think the status-quot is defended by those unable to admit they or their political parties both presided over the situation. They want to blame one another while the rot accelerates.

Slogans and bullshit will bankrupt America unless they curtail this "Free Trade" in goods and securities. The rules of trade are unbalanced in not recognizing cheap labour and appalling working conditions as a dumped commodity.

Of course none of this has anything much to do with earning a dollar on board--but a little sheet metalwork, sail making and repairs, software creation or alteration and work with ropes and splices have all brought me a little money at one time or another but never enough.

Re: Make Money While Cruising - List

Gotta love Aussies....recognised Mr Banks' origin without even checking the shingle or seeing him admit it in his post. So, if those useful things you can't support your sailing any more, what does? Or is that a secret?

A general musing or two.....

What if a customer agrees to purchase my services in my country, but not being there has to take delivery in his country.....would that be a way of getting around restrictive alien-labour laws? Not that I'd ever consider doing a hard-up local out of his livelihood, just supply a service the locals can't, and get around the mess of red tape that strangles initiative these days.

Or how about setting some locals up in a business, generating an ongoing local benefit and merely taking a modest but continual return once the thing is self-sustaining? Of course, a little palm-greasing and sweet-talking would probably be necessary, but at more palatable levels than the hypocrisy in western "civilisation". I'd rather that Troung the customs guy and his various official buddies got a little baksheesh for permitting some business-building that mostly benefits the little people, and keeps me in rum & beans, than feeding some faceless bureacrap-colossus more moulah that they'll only misuse anyway....

Would that not all run contrary to your espoused biblical references? I can give you about 10 that suggest it would not be biblical to take or give bribes.

Or are you one of those cafeteria bible believers, you know, the ones who take the part they like and leave the part they don't?

Re: Make Money While Cruising - List

This is what I have done dozens of times...if the sale is made in the US,I can then deliver my products to a given country as long as I dont except money in the 2nd country...Make your deals out at sea over a satellite Phone and then arrive at port ready to "deliver" your serves...(This I have not done)

Please forgive me, indeed, I have sinned in advocating bribery...I repent. The desire to benefit locals still stands, though. And in what ways are we forced into such sins and compromises every day, trying to live Godly in an increasingly unGodly world?

No, I am not a cafeteria christian, nor am I one that twists Scripture, or quotes it much on this forum other than my moniker and sig. I am however one that is painfully conscious of Paul's quandary in Romans 7, but comforted by what he says in chapter 9. For instance, I believe God does not love everyone, nor does He desire to save everyone, though He does command that The Gospel be preached to every creature, for the salvation of His elect only and the damnation of the reprobate. By admitting this, I've annoyed most of what calls itself "christian" nowadays, and that is but one instance, I could fill pages of doctrinal abberancy that plagues the ekklesia today. Just about any denomination would hate me for something. I am a genuinely well-hateable person, but the One that has most reason to hate me would be God Almight Himself...yet despite that, He has given evidence that He loves me. For a christian, being hated, even despising ones' self, is par for the course. I don't intentionally set out to offend. Now, I wouldn't have brought it up here, and won't go on, but hopefully demonstrated that I take the Scripture as it is written, even the bits that make me a pariah and a prey. Even the bits that drive me on my knees to beg mercy from The Judge.

If you're a brother in The Lord Jesus Christ, I thank you for the slap as I deserved it, though perhaps your first approach should have been private, Biblically; if you're a false professor, you may never agree to sovereign grace and will hate me for what I said above, even though The Lord Himself said as much and also much more, if you care to read John 6, 10 and 17 and take it as written; and if you've simply trolled me (perhaps by agreement with another?), congratulations....though that too has its purpose in the eternal plan. Have I regained a brother, or hardened an enemy? As I said, I don't intend to offend, and if my plainspeaking manner has done so to someone, then I ask forgiveness. For the content, I am not ashamed. Anything further, in PM, please.

Back to the thread, and for the record, no bribes or any other lawlessness. Overseas or at home...

In answer to Micah--

Well--Thank God I'm an atheist--

I make a small income from property and I have a small pension--being as I am an ancient fossil. I may not have either much longer though--

Mike Banks; ah, ok, thanks...good to know you're taken care of financially. As to life expectancy....none of us is guaranteed the next breath, so it's good to be thankful for every moment and appreciate it. There's no atheists in foxholes...

Sorry Micah, but don't you know that the god of the Bible is actually gods and they were aliens? You never read Francis Crick's paper on Directed Panspermia did you?
