Actually, excellent examples. But first, the guy in Alaska is in essence a "local" in that he is working within his own home country. Making a living while cruising is very "do-able" if you stay within your own country and comply with any State/Local regulations. It is the same for "locals" in another country, they can move about their country and do work without too many hassles.

It is when you try to earn money in some other country that you are not a citizen of, or for which don't have a work permit that the situation can get dicey.

Your Puerto Vallarta experience is an excellent example that brings up the real dilemma of what do you do when there is no "experienced" or "knowledgeable" local to do the work. There is no shortage of locals all over the world who think that just beating on "it" with a bigger hammer will fix the problem - or just can't admit that they don't really know how to "fix it." They make good-hearted attempts but just cannot do it.

It is in these cases that prudence would dictate that the "alien" cruiser with the knowledge/skill becomes the "advisor" to the owner who is "doing the repair." (Tongue in cheek) The "Advisor" has been known to get his fingers into the fixing, "but only to show how it is done" so the owner can "learn." And it all, is kept very quiet with the understanding you don't go bragging to others within earshot of locals that this or that "cruiser" can fix it.

I have done a lot of cabinetry and other woodwork on my boat and am taking my tools with me with the intention of using those skills to make stuff for other boats

I think it's a great idea and could work well for you. I think as people use their boats a lot they tend to want little carpentry tweaks: doors cut into dead spaces in the cabinetry to make new storage, a drying rack for dishes over the sink, shelves where the microwave used to be, or a new panel for flush mounted electronics, and etc.

My problem is I have one(small)and it can only be seen if I show it but it still bothers me after 31 yrs.one of the worse things a person can do to themselves when young and not thinking ahead IMO...DVC
