Sequoyah has a single bookshelf. If you stretch out the sliding bookends, you can get about a foot and a half of shelving space. That's not a lot of books.

The ones I have in it now are the boat operator's manual, Chapman, Don Casey's maintenance bible, Nigel Caulder's engine guide, an old copy of the Annapolis Book of Seamanship, and a gaggle of paperbacks including the Coast Guard's required brochures.

That just isn't enough. I broke down, gave up on being a Luddite, and ordered a Kindle Oasis the other day. It's arrived. The first book I bought to put onto it is Peggie Hall's gem of a sanitation how-to.

The Kindle is a few ounces, about 7x6xfraction inches in size, and will hold cabinets of books in its 32 gigabytes. It's waterproof (or so they claim) against those days I forget and leave it in the cockpit with rain coming. The battery, which they say goes weeks between charges, has actually made a few days and is only half drained. You really can read it in sunlight, just as advertised.

So far, I'm impressed. More importantly, it appears to solve the problem of too short a bookshelf. It may get the job done for me.

I'm hardly the only one with this problem. What are the rest of you doing?

Doin’ the same thing; Kindle, iPad, Amazon Prime has thousands of free ”downloadables” with the subscription, 2 - 4TB hardrives and we have the hard books for medical stuff, Nigel Calders books for repairing things and some “how to sail” type books.
I presume most of still like being able to dog ear a book while working on something or flipping back and forth re-reading something and being able to write notes on the pages.

Slowly reducing the number of books. Nigel Calders book is at home, bought it but never refer to it. You tube is more useful.

However, I have been picking up cheap second hand cooking books off Amazon for slow cooker and pressure cooker type of ideas. One small locker like you is all we can afford for books so they earn there keep or go. The yacht club library do quite well out of us and they are there for others to use as well.

Yep, same thing. I don't have books onboard anymore. All kindle.

I have some technical books and like above some cheap second hand cook books. Most of my stuff is on the oasis kindle (which I've proven is waterproof for at least dew/light misty rain). I make sure amazon loses money by using the Kindle Unlimited service.

I guess another advantage of the Kindle is that it won't mildew as badly as a book can.

We have a Kobo reader (simple paper-white sunlight readable). I actually won it in a draw in 2012. Still hanging in and working fine. It's been great because you can't keep that many books in a 19' boat.

I bought an Oasis also.
I wouldn’t again, it’s is a LOT of money and has no real advantage over the Paper White, you can get a Paper White for $80.
The Oasis starts at $250. What upset me the most was the claim of weeks of battery life, more like two days if you Read a lot and that is with it in airplane mode and managing the screen light, I see no increase in battery life over a Paper White.

We use Android tablets with books from our local library (Overdrive app) or from Kindle, Nook, Google Play... and our whole boat systems library of PDF files (Acrobat app)... and our deck of a few thousand boat systems pics (Picasa app).

And then the tablets also act as our third, fourth, and fifth level of nav backup... and access to other useful stuff (weather, etc.).

And there's 150 more behind the seat cushions. i cant get rid of them now...they have become important ballast.

Here is one on a boat I built a few years back at PJ, motor yacht, 151 ft. was before Kindle and the owner really loved books. I always had plenty of choices of reading material!
Guess these would all fit on a thumb drive now... but it was nice to pick up a book in a nice anchorage and sit down and enjoy it.
