Legal owner on board at all times!

Hi, I am just about to buy my first boat, , I plan to just have my name on the ownership papers as I am paying for it, but will be travelling with my partner. Is it true that in some areas of the world you always have to have the owner on board? There may be times when I'm not on board, if my boyfriend isn't on the ownership papers will this be a problem? Can you just write a letter of permission from the owner to be aboard? I may be wrong? Any help welcome. Rachel.

On my Australian registration paper there is a box that appoints the Master. I put both myself and my girlfriend as Masters.

And/or appoint him by letter as Master in a as needed basis, or a general one for when you are not aboard.

That will be fine world wide.

In some Arab countries they may 'prefer' to have a male as Master (yes, I know!) and you may, when there chose to do that or be strong

Some officials maybe more encouraged to ask a higher bribe from a female than male. Just say no. It may take a day linger to get things done, but they will be done.

Also, and this is a private note that requires no response, if your relationship is not that strong then it would be best not to have him listed as a Master.
If he was and there was a relationship breakdown he could clear the boat out whilst you are ashore.

Just write a letter appointing him skipper in your absence.. no big deal.. you can even set dates from 12/5/2016 to when you expect to return to the vessel.
Staple a photocopy of your passport to the letter.

A little morbid but...
For a long term cruising couple who are very secure in their plans, but not nor plan to get married you should think about what will happen if one ends up passing unexpectedly. We met two different boats where the leagal owner had passed of a heart attack and the partner was left in limbo with the next of kin giving them the boot and selling the boat.

Another consideration is insurance. If you are buying "Yacht" insurance (vs. covering the boat under a homeowners policy) you will likely need to list him as the co-insured in order to be covered for offshore travels.

These are the right problems to have...

Relationships can go south very quickly. Thinking "it won't happen to us" is not rational.
It's a huge investment. Protect yourself. I've been there. It's not something you want to have to deal with. Especially outside the US.

As I recall, there are a few places that were very strict on charterboat registration and fees. In those cases, they want to know if the owner is aboard. In 98% of the places they don't care.

Even cruising to Mexico you should consider the ownership and designated Master carefully. If the owner is away or not available the port captain may require a notarized (Mexican notary) letter giving authority to the master to move the boat from one port to another or to leave Mexico to return to the States.

Are pet's a problem coming here are they? I live on an Island and they have truly tightened up here just from bringing animals in from the mainland. So wouldn't entirely surprise me.

So Mexico and Insurance considerations. I've checked my insurance and as long as a person is acting with my permission, then there's not a problem. And my insurance doesn't include leaving Australia, so that might be another consideration.
