Inexpensive Marinas on US east coast

Hi Every one.

Im thinking of buying a boat in Florida but I live in Ontario Canada so it is to late to get her home until spring .


Im looking for a spot to put her until the Erie Canal opens in the spring.


I understand I have to get her out of Florida or be charged sales tax. Im looking for a good marina on the east coast of the US that I could sail her to that is save from hurricanes, and is reasonably priced .

She's a big boat 85 foot mast , 7 foot draft, and 58 feet on deck .

Any Ideas?

St. Mary's GA. Good access just across the border from FL and no bridges. Class A inlet (St. Mary's River). As for "safe from hurricanes", there's no guarantee anywhere on the east coast.

Thanks I will take a look at the place. Do you have the name of the Marina ?

Some are better protected then others from hurricanes , looking for one that is a little on the better protected side,

I may be incorrect but I don't remember Northeast Florida taking a "direct hit" in over 40 years. We have had "outer band" winds above 70 in downtown Jacksonville within the last 5 years however from passing hurricanes.

I spent a night in St.Marys this spring. A very quiet town and when I went through the master was not on VHF, had to call on the phone a few times to get in touch with him.

Look up the marina on active captain for reviews and the reach number. Nice guy with decent floating docks and water but I would not trust the electrical supply. Best if you keep your batteries topped off with solar.

Try Beaufort NC Town Dock. If last years pricing still applies you will be looking at $458 per month from December 1 until April 1 all in.

Sassafrass river, maryland. deep water and a few marinas that can handle a boat that size.

We liked Georgetown Yacht Basin on the Sassafras River. Very well run place. Only minus is the time it takes to get to good sailing grounds.

We moved to Chesapeake Boat Works in Deltaville where we are hauling our boat for maintenance. They handle big boats. Better sailing and repair opportunities in Deltaville than Georgetown. Lots of marinas in Deltaville.

Annapolis also looked very good, but spendy.

Speak to the Florida revenue people or a knowledgeable broker. You have at least two ways to leave it in Florida:
"

Foreign Flagged Vessels
Boats flying a foreign flag are exempt from Florida use tax if they have a current license to cruise issued by the U.S. Customs Service. Licenses to cruise are available only to boats flagged in countries that have a treaty with the United States. The boat will remain exempt as long as you do not violate the provisions of the license to cruise."
As you are purchasing the boat in the US, you may or may not be required to remove it from US waters before getting that permit, you'd need to check.
But also "If the boat is 5 net tons of admeasurement or larger, the purchaser may obtain a set of Florida Department of Revenue boat decals, which authorize the boat to remain in Florida waters up to 90 days after the purchase. This period may be extended to 180 days with the purchase of a 90-day extension decal. The decals must be obtained from the selling dealer or broker."

Doesn't matter much which state the boat is in, almost every state will demand taxes and registration fees if the boat is there for 90 days in a row, or more than 183 days in the year, or some other limits.

The cruising permit might be your best bet. Otherwise, a 180-day exemption, start the trip, and when you get to New York you can wait for not more than 90 days as a transient without having to register or pay tax there. Total, 270 days, plenty of time to get the canal open.

Washington NC and Oriental are pretty reasonable, at about 250/month plus electric. Oriental also has a free anchorage you may be able to stay free for a month or two. You'd have to stick to the channel to get there probably but just check the charts carefully as shoaling can sometimes be a problem I've been told.

No rush getting out of Florida; as a Canadian, you can get a 12-month cruising licence for 26 loonies.
Take your time and enjoy the gorgeous US East Coast

Thanks for all the great info guys,

I checked with the broker and he said I could get a 180 day permit from the date of close. This gives us plenty of time . In the spring I will take a month and bring her up the east coast.
