Re: How to know if my boat is US duty paid ?

I have a vessel that was built in South Africa in 2002 and imported in June of 2002 to Florida. There have been 6 US based owners of our vessel and the broker we are using to sell our boat insists since I do not have form 7501 that I have to pay duty. It never came up when we bought it in 2018 or the previous owner when he bought it in 2015. After many phone calls to many agencies, we have not been able to determine if duty was paid.

To sell our boat, the broker wants the form or to only sell it outside the US. I will try contacting Steele Reader but my wife said she called some other agents and nobody was able to determine if duty was paid. I feel like I selected the wrong broker. Any more advice as to how to determine if duty was paid by one of the previous 5 owners in the US? Thanks….

Didn't a trade agreement exempt South Africa boats from duties? There would be no duty paid because none was required.

Bull, That trade agreement is AGOA, the African Growth and Opportunity act which was signed into law by Clinton in 2000.

Your broker should know this.

Agree! Your broker gets on board or find another.
