As others have said, it varies.

That said, the typical "middle class" cruiser tends to be around $2-3k per month not counting initial purchase or major refit. YMMV

I think $2-$3k per month is a very real ball park number but as you mention, not including major refit.

Cruising can be pretty cheap, well under the $2-$3k/month price if you're careful, anchor out, cook at home, DIY maintenance, etc. However, if something big breaks your budget is out the window. Engine or transmission goes it could be thousands. Lose the mast, thousands.

For me I don't include this type of thing in my regular operating budget. How can you plan or schedule catastrophes? I just try to keep a good sized chunk of just in case money set aside for the (hopefully) rare big hits and consider that a separate budget issue.
