El Salvadore Flagged Catamaran Purchase in Panama by clueless US Citizen! HELP

Hi all -

This is my first post in Cruiser's Forum, although I have benefitted from many of your posts over the years. Well, I am finally ready to buy a boat and go cruising with my family. I've found a boat that seems like the right boat in Panama. It's flagged in El Salvadore and is for sale by owner. He reports no liens on the boat.

I want to make sure everything is done in a way that protects me, but I'm not sure what to do beyond hiring a marine surveyor. Also, he has sent me a contract he wrote. Is that even legally binding? I just don't know how to do this.

Also, if anyone has a marine surveyor in Panama they can recommend, please let me know.

Thanks in advance for all the help,

I think you need a lawyer in El Salvador to verify clear title and manage the transfer of ownership.

Cannot say about Panama or El Salvador, but in the US, if you sign it and the terms don't violate any laws, then the contract would be legally binding. Wouldn't matter if it was written by a three year old on the back of a napkin.
The water is always bluer on the other side of the ocean.
