Re: Curiosity killed a cat or something...

As a freelancer in my misspent youth I worked very hard for my living. The digital age has opened the door to many exciting avenues for my shift into retirement. I don't expect to make a living shooting photo/video but if I can support my drinking habit that will extend my liveaboard years... The beauty of the new subject matter, boats and their surroundings will keep the overhead in check vs aviation.

Re: Curiosity killed a cat or something...

I just recently started watching La Vagabonde since I bought this new wifi dvd player. I can play the you tube on my monster flat screen, and as there is absolutely nothing on 500 channels of cable aside from every Law and Order episode I've seen at least twice, it's another means of entertainment. I think I watched all the episodes in two nights because they are only like 12 min long each. Lets face it, she is easy to watch. First of all she is beautiful, then the ridiculous assets kick in. She has a great personality, she free dives and spear fishes without fear, has a great voice and can play guitar, doesn't mind getting dirty cleaning fish, cooking etc. and she has a great attitude about the whole thing. There isn't a man on here who isn't like,( **** I should of just said f-it and gone sailing in my late twenties early thirties with some young beautiful girl like that). I know I keep thinking that, and I'm not waiting anymore. I don't have any delusions of grandeur either about meeting some 25 year old young hottie. I have a beautiful girlfriend and I told her, she has to make a real decision, because I am going. She may come, she may decide she can't do it, but I'm going to rent my house next fall and finally go. The longer you wait the less chance you'll actually go, and you better go while you can still climb a mast and fix stuff if the **** hits the fan. Lets be honest, even if your filthy rich and have a huge mansion, at 70 you'll be in three rooms, the kitchen, the tv room and your bedroom. My point is, save up until what?, your to old to enjoy yourself or do anything. You don't need that much when your an old fart. The La Vagabonde videos have actually woken me up and snapped me out of the BS of waiting until next year when I have everything just perfectly set up. Next year will turn into next year, will turn into next year. I won't send them any money, but you have to give it to her, she does try to put a good little edited video on. She's very talented.

Re: Curiosity killed a cat or something...

Lisa Kelly became the big star of Ice Road Truckers. Young blondes will do that. So if your making a sailing film, take a trick from IRT. Fwiw, the producers had a squabble about including her in their all male cast. Some thought she would make the show a pansy and turn "real" men off of watching(guess it was targeting the "other" guys). Anyhow, within three months she had taken over the show in terms of viewership and fan mail. They tried to keep her on but she had made enough $(rumored to be about $30 million) and called it quits.

So blonde, young, and bubbly. Also doing things traditionally done by guys. Skimpy micro thongs will also help. Wardrobe malfunctions a real plus.

Actually there is another person who has motivated me to go as well and he's a moderator on this sight, it's Monte lol. Monte if you happen to read this, every time you make a post and I have to look at that picture of you on your boat with your beautiful wife or girlfriend and that **** eating grin on your face, lol I'm like , that lucky son of a bitch, that should be me. lol So Monte, one day I am going to find you, pull up next to you in my 15.5 Idylle, drop the hook, dingy over with a bottle and were going to crank some old Bon Scott DC and get banged up ok. lol

Can you please reference this video? By the way was the boat abandoned? Or was what you were talking about an act of piracy?

AAAAAAGGGGHHH!
I'm an idiot!
Ha, ha, ha. I couldn't help myself either. Nice physique and form, Boatman! What's missing in these cruising videos is more hot guys in speedos doing something interesting. Why do the babes in bikinis seem to get all the video time

Monte has the right perspective on this -- different times, same basic model. The majority of people's lives would be deadly tedious if they weren't able to live vicariously off someone else's adventures!

Blonde: check
Young: check
bubbly: check
doing things traditionally done by guys: check (drinking beer and fishing in the cock pit, also already talking about going aloft - rock clicking probably has something to do with this).
Skimpy micro thong: hell no, she's a boardies and T-shirts gal.
Wardrobe malfunctions: hell no.

I thought I had a shot at this up to the micro thong part...

What's more likely to happen in my case:

her filming me
me having to cook
me having to clean the fish she caught
me having to gofer beer
me being dressed in skimpy micro thong (would not be by choice, she knows kung fu). I know Goat will pay for this - so there's some hope.

I need to find a way to fund all the items I'm sacrificing to the ocean...

There's been some very insightful replies, thank you. I think I'm starting to understand it now.

Monte, for the first time, I just looked at the photo you use. You appear to be adequately compensated for your services if the photo depicts perks.

Re: Curiosity killed a cat or something...

I enjoy following their adventures online. More recently, a nice american couple in the Caribbean:

https://www.youtube.com/c/mondaynever

I pay for netflix. I pay for magazines. I pay to go to the movies. These folks are giving up their privacy, their time, and sharing their lives with us. A few bucks is a bargain. And you are under no obligation to pay.

I think it makes people feel good to send a few bucks.

If you have ever tried to make a decent youtube video, you would understand the effort and work they are doing for us.

Here is a video my daughter made. It was a huge undertaking. She isn't asking for any money. But watching the number of views go up and up is a great reward...so maybe save a few bucks and watch her video:

apple devices block the video because of the music soundtrack...so here it is for you apple users...sorry, but its much better with the music:

FYI, she was 15 when she made this (last summer). We bought the laser cheap, and had to do some fiberglass repair. Later that season, the tiller extension snapped, and she collided with a Pearson 30. Yup, mine. Wish I had that on video. Nothing a little rum couldn't fix though.

I can't believe that people feel that other boaters shouldn't make shows for money.

I guess you feel the same way the Shard's? Or about Curious Traveler TV? Or maybe Anthony Bourdain?

I never said that I don't feel they shouldn't make shows for money, although others have.

I was just wondering why in the internet age of everybody wanting everything for nothing, people are paying. I was one of the very early iPhone app developers, I had an app on the app store when there was less than 1000 apps. I barely broke even on the time spent building the app vs opportunity cost. It was quite impressive how entitled people got when they paid $1 for an app. the $1 wouldn't even have covered the time I took to reply to their email.

Do not get me wrong, I'm all for enterprising people doing things in creative ways, that's what keeps the world interesting. Sometimes the logic just escapes me completely.

While I fully intend to produce some videos myself aboard Taleisin, I can't imagine anybody would actually be willing to give me money for it. Wouldn't stop me from doing it provided I have the time and resources available. This of course is predicated on the fact that I won't have to sacrifice any technology to the ocean for safe passage - my track record is pretty bad so far...
