I'm superstitious...so why fight it? We found a thorough renaming ceremony script online (so it must be true) and followed it to the letter. We had a GREAT time (as best I can remember) with some friends and the renaming ceremony....there were a lot of toasts and a lot of wine was poured. Since then, I've got a couple thousand miles under the keel with the new name...(touches wood) :-)
At the very least, a renaming ceremony is a great excuse to have a party! Your boat name is definitely one way that your boat shouldn't cause you stress...it'll do that in plenty of other ways...

Superstitions are rubbish. (So is poking fun at your boat's name. I talk about having a "Plan B" all the tie and have never heard any comments.)

If you want to change the name, change the name. But are you a Greek/Roman pagan? Do you REALLY believe there is a Neptune out there waiting to give you trouble? Your boat is so important to this nonexistent pagan god?

Personally, I doubt it.

Completely agree with the party part. Deep six the superstitions, do what you want and have fun! I went to a "renaming" party -- with a script -- and I thought the script was pretentious and silly.

I am thinking about this as I want to rename my boat, and I think I'll do it more like a wedding ceremoney, with people making toasts to my boat. No Neptune.

That's what is so crazy about it. i looked around and saw people who are deeply Christian, deeply Jewish, agnostics, athiests, and humanists all praying to ... Neptune.

I just thought it was really bizarre.

Love a good party and ESPECIALLY a good party with champagne. But pretending to believe in Neptune is only one of many good (better IMO) ways to have a party.

Ah yes, perhaps Neptune doesn't exist. But can you afford to take the chance?

And I suspect denaming/renaming done properly drops a few points in your seamanship black box. Credit to be used someday when you really need it.

If nothing else, the ceremony is good fun. What's the harm?

The whole Neptune renaming thing may be fun for some people, but I've always thought it was just silly. Little kids do that "pinkie swear" thing with that gesture where they link pinkie fingers. A harmless little ritual, but would you still do that as an adult? Makes me laugh - I work at court, can you imagine a witness in a courtroom doing a pinkie swear with the bailiff? This Neptune stuff is in the same category to me.
