Yup, seen a few like this. They're either looking for personal data (phishing) or they will do the old "I'll send you more than the boat is worth, you send the difference back" thing.

Here's a good link that summarizes:

Seen many like this, especially if advertised on Craig's list. They all seem to have the same ring to them.... dump it into the spam file immediately.

Re: Advice on scam "Boat for sale"

Yeah, the key is always no phone call or number or any request for additional information. I've gotten about a 100 of these from my posts on CL. A couple of times I worked them over and received the bogus check. The first one I went to my bank and asked them to check it out. I did not deposit it. Don't do this or you will be hit with a fee from your bank. Anyway, my bank verified in minutes that it was a fake check from a fake account. I did cost them money because they had to pay Fedex next day air. My little way of fighting back.

Re: Advice on scam "Boat for sale"

I do agree with everyone above^ But it's real simple to find out ask for his phone # and name he already has her e-mail so couldn't hurt anything to reply and most likely a scammer not going to reply back with that info! ,you never know but really does sound "fishy"

this one is a classic

The Powerbook Prank: He wanted a Powerbook. We gave him a P-P-P-Powerbook!

personally if you have nothing else to do I would tell him you will take the cashers check, let him MAIL it to you,,,, it is a federal offense to mail a fake check using the US MAIL,,,,fedex does not count

you can have some fun with him

If you check the full header on the email, you'll probably find it originated in Nigeria.

Re: Advice on scam "Boat for sale"

I get these a lot and always let them mail me a check just for laughs to increase their expenses. The check will be fake of course. I use the alias of "kenu Blowme". It is a common name in Nigeria or so I am told.

Re: Advice on scam "Boat for sale"

Absolutely. DO assume it is a fraud, and DO pull their chain as long and hard as you chain. The best way to keep them from robbing someone else, is to keep them busy.

Yes yes, please send check. Oh, you sent check? Gee, we didn't get it, mailbox was broken into, please place stop order and send new check. Oh, we're going out of town, please fedex overnight check. Oh, the fedex came but there was no check in the envelope, we'll be back next week but we got an offer $4000 higher, if you can match it you were first, please send another check.

When the good lord offers you toys, it is only right to play with them.

Re: Advice on scam "Boat for sale"

Simple, tell them to send the cheque and it will take 60-90 days to clear the banking system, see if they stay turned or not.
