Re: Winter Boat Projects

I’m planning on making insect screens for the overhead hatches, a new outboard mount for the stern rail, a new backstay and a pair of dyneema running backstays.
I got our old Singer 401 running this week and may get a couple small canvas projects done too.
It’s snowing today so it seems I’ll have lots of winter to fill!

Re: Winter Boat Projects

Screens for the hatches are a great idea, will have to add that to my list. That reminds me that I have to rebed the ports in the spring as I have several that are leaking. I also thought of getting a custom companion way zippered bug screen made.

Snowing here as well..... The countdown to spring is underway !!!!

Re: Winter Boat Projects

Both are good projects. Dripping water and mosquitoes in the boat are both very near the top of my “annoying situation “ lists!
Best of luck with your winter list!

Re: Winter Boat Projects

Need to replace my Raymarine speed sensor paddle wheel. Need to replace my propane hose from the tanks to the stove/oven. Need to add a strainer for engine water. Need to replace seal in my raw water pump.

Re: Winter Boat Projects

The list is big but I think do-able
1. Convince AIS receiver in radio that it should talk with chartplotter nicely.
2. Remove and sell old style worm gear steering
3. Install conventional pedestal with well laid out cables.(find a used 36" wheel and compass)
4. Finish installation of shower sump / pump
5. Refinish butterfly hatch
6. Manufacture screens for bronze portholes
7. Scrub out at least 1 of 3 water tanks
8. Fish a lead from VHF to ram mike location at helm
9. Take a serious look at celestial navigation (Have a sextant, but would like to know how to use it
10. Improve sound insulation above engine
11. Add ventilation to engine space for exhaust air.
12. Consume rum and cigar stores to replenish with fresh stock for 2019

And maybe squeeze in a long winters nap.

Re: Winter Boat Projects

Admittedly, I don't know how to splice. Terrible. Every winter I say I'm going to learn, but I have yet to do so. Maybe this winter?

Wire splicing is an almost lost art. Curious as to what you need it for.

Re: Winter Boat Projects

My project for this winter was to learn splicing and celestial navigation. So far I am still at the splicing stage. For all of you that haul out for the winter we are on countdown to launch.

Re: Winter Boat Projects

I have a few projects for this layup, but Not too many...
1) fix propane locker (redo hoses and some fiberglass work)
2) buff out hull and wax
3) touch up bottom paint...painted last year, but will touch up
4) fix mount for wind sensor at masthead
5) replace old hoses for head
6) rebed stancion bases and deck fills
7) replace shaft zinc

Greg

Most can wait till I am in the water, but need the weather to improve to get the hull waxed and painted. Where is SPRING?
