Truck Mast for Erie Canal Transit?

Hi all,

Planning a trip through the Erie Canal in August from Buffalo to Albany. I have read many posts about storing the mast on the boat but would like to consider having it shipped via truck. Can anyone offer their experience including cost, trucking companies and if it was a good idea?

Sorry, Can't offer the cost of trucking the mast.

But the distance is so short, less than four hour drive between two point. The labor, coordination between the trucker and the shipyard, loading and unloading, it is not worth it. You are heavily rely on some many other to do it right.

It is easier to make a couple "A frames" with 2x4 - lumber, circular saw, screw gun (110 v). A few guys with a shipyard crane, less headache, Done.

I would consider it if the distance is from Great Lakes to the Gulf or from Buffalo to NYC.

But whatever floats your boat. I am just sayin'

Don't know about now but when I used to run the canal a few guys tried to truck masts as a business. Unfortunately for just one mast not a money making proposition. They'd wait until they got a couple so there was no guarantee that the mast would be at Catskill when you got there.

Your best bet is to call the marina where you're taking the mast down and ask them. Mast truckers usually use a pick up and a long trailer. It's a specialized business, not one trucking companies do (unless they got your boat too).

I carried my mast over 16 times on the canal. Not a problem. Got so I'd have the stick up or down and the boat ready to go in a few hours. Easier with a keel stepped mast.

I thought you can hitchhike on NYS thruway just outside Buffalo for one of passing empty bed trucks going east.

Thanks for your opinions. I ended up finding a place to get some quotes and I am going to carry the mast on the boat. Not at all cost effective to ship.
