THUNDER BAY is Officially an Asteroid

Members of the Thunder Bay chapter of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada on Friday announced the International Astronomical Union has accepted its proposal to named a minor planet after Northwestern Ontario’s largest city.

Formerly known as 1942 TB, can now also be referred to as 11780 Thunder Bay.

Thunder Bay has a better ring to it than 1942 TB .

Congrats to all in Thunder Bay. How long does it take 11780 Thunder Bay to orbit the sun?

Is that 4.06 years Canadian? If so, that would be around 2.9 years U.S!

Very interesting news and thank you for sharing that.

Cool. I no longer call it home, but Thunder Bay will always have a fond place in my heart. I dearly miss sailing Lake Superior.

Why did we leave again . Oh ya, that thing called winter…

Imagine what winter is like on 11780 Thunder Bay.

We also commemorated Thunder Bay. That's what I call the head my husband uses.

Congrats about the asteroid, not the head.

Re: THUNDER BAY is Officially an Asteroid

Is it a tidal asteroid and does it have any Finnish restaurants such as The Hoito?

If Thunder Bay can be an asteroid then I nominate Sudbury as a hemeroid....

Re: THUNDER BAY is Officially an Asteroid

Nope, but according to Wikipedia:
“... A newly discovered asteroid is given a provisional designation consisting of the year of discovery and an alphanumeric code indicating the half-month of discovery and the sequence within that half-month. Once an asteroid's orbit has been confirmed, it is given a number, and later may also be given a name ...”

Re: THUNDER BAY is Officially an Asteroid

You guys are killin' me, the humor runs deep on this thread!

If Sudbury is nominated a hemmoroid, then what is Detroit?

When I first read the title I thought that it was going to be announced that TB was an asteroid strike, like Charity Shoal in Lake Ontario. Or meteor strike, or whatever. If it comes out of space and makes a big hole in the earth, that's impressive.

I heard that there is indeed a Finnish restaurant on the asteroid. The food is supposed to be quite good but there's not much atmosphere!

Thunder Bay largest Finnish community in Canada, Sudbury is next, then Montreal. Grungy is of Finnish Heritage, we make monthly trips to our place of birth Sudbury to meet with siblings/friends at Leinala's Bakery, eat Pula, Jelly Pigs...drink coffee...
