Spring is coming - When's your launch?

So, the weather in our end of the big lakes has been pretty frustrating, and cabin fever is getting to me, and I need to hear about boats going into water.

Last fall our marina was very optimistic, talked about starting in mid-April "if the ice is off the bay." Obviously that didn't happen. I'm probably going down on Monday to start prep work, but with a minor rudder repair, bottom paint, and some other odds and ends on the "must do" list, I'm starting to think mid-May is more realistic.

Great Lakes folks, what's your schedule for the spring? I need to hear good news.

Re: Spring is coming - When's your launch?

Not great lakes, but by Edmonton Alberta. I hope we can launch by mid may. I went to the lake today and it was definately solid ice still. I would guess close to a foot thick.
There was some water in the launch area, but only a few inches on top off some rather thick ice. It was very depressing.
For prep work, I only have to do some fairing on the keel and a coat of vc 17. I'm also putting in a wash down pump, but the plumbing is there. I just need to install the pump, so can do that floating.

Lake Ontario - Toronto area. Various club Launches starting April 27 and extending to mid May. Luckily crazy late season ice/snow storms and winter weather have passed and we were able to start removing covers etc, in sunshine, mid this past week. Water levels are only a few inches higher than normal, so no dock problems.

Not until late May but only due to our lack of proximity to the boat.

Re: Spring is coming - When's your launch?

1000 islands, marina owner wants to launch me asap because the boat behind wants out for a sale showing. Problem is, it has been too cold for bottom paint, so I may have to pay to have it blocked outside for a while. I also want to install my Weaver davits on the swim platform before launch, and cannot access it in its current location. But today is actually the first day over 10C. The Spirit is rising!

Toronto-area club. The cranes are coming next weekend, so right now the yard is a scene of feverish activity, the smell of polyester resin and bottom-paint in the air.

Because of the crap weather and starting a new job*, I've decided to self-launch hopefully by mid-May. But any time at the club is good time, as long as it's warm and sunny. I can mooch rides on other peoples' boats.

*seriously crap planning on my part to have been unemployed over the winter, and then land a job just as boating season starts.

Re: Spring is coming - When's your launch?

Getting ready starting tomorrow for our scheduled 5 May launch. Tomorrow's job is to scrap off all the barnacles from the hull and metals. Next put a coat of primer on the metal as a base that hopefully will keep the hard bottom paint on them through the season. Also for tomorrow remove shrink wrap and Tuesday, wash/wax it. Yard is going to paint the bottom.

Scheduled for May 16th, here in Connecticut off long island sound. Still working on replacing all fresh water lines with pex, new fresh water pump/new canister filter, new water heater, bottom paint, 2 new zincs, exhaust elbow inspection/possible replace, rebuild Raritan II head - the rest of projects are above water line (clean/lube winches, new main sheet, install new gps & ais). 60 degrees/sunny today, but cover on until end of next wk.

Our marina, at the top of Lake Champlain, isn't even open yet. But we were one of the last ones out so are positioned to be one of the first back in...mid-May.

Sails inspected and minor repairs done. Dodger same.

In the meantime, getting in some early season bike rides on partly snow covered bike trails!

Re: Spring is coming - When's your launch?

Some hardy folks sail year round in B.C. Canada, The water never goes 'hard' here in the winter and winter cruising can be very pleasant among the Gulf Islands or San Juan's ... no problem finding a mooring spot, empty docks etc. solitude. Fantastic! It's best though if you have a cabin heater of some kind such as a Dickinson diesel or propane for comfort.

Re: Spring is coming - When's your launch?

My boat went in on April 2nd. I've been living on the boat full time since then! I'm in West Harbor on Lake Erie and won't come out until November 1st unless I decide to move to South Carolina.
