Making my way east along the Erie canal when Miss Irene came calling! Clearly it is a plan B situation now. That would be to backtrack to the southern leg of the Great Loop and see how that goes. Anyone done it? I'm fishing for advice and suggestions here.

Any estimate of when the Erie Canal will be open again? The water usually goes down in a week or two so unless there's structural damage it should be ok.

The guy I talked to doesn't think it will reopen till next year. The damage is extensive. I can't even go west till some mud and debris is cleared. That should be next week, maybe.

If that's true it'll screw up a lot of plans for Great Lakes sailors hoping to head south in September. The NY Canals website doesn't give any indication of when it'll open again.

I am sitting in Tonawanda and from everyone I have talked to that is in the know, there is no point in me going any further, so I am loading my boat on a transport and shipping to Annapolis which is the recomended location to ship to since the Hudson is not doing much better. sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the NY canal corp. should be telling everyone instead of having to dig up the infomation oursleves if you dont believe me look and some of the utube video of damage to the control dams there is a lot of locations now with only 2' of water. Of the 4 boats at Tonawanda heading south, 2 are going to transport to Annapolis 1 is pulling at Buffalo for the winter and 1 is heading to the Mississippi.

the damage in the foto looked like at least 5 yrs to fix, by beurocratic standards, or even longer, but i dunno what ny is gonna do about it-- does any major shipping still happen there? if not, then it will sit for a bit, methinks.

Glad to help out. That was my intention. I know the grief of being pegged in. I use to cruise out Green Cove Springs, Florida. I met these nice people from Tonawanda. They would do 6 months in each place. Later I opened, and closed a business, and I built this muffler family to gather attention. When I closed the business they took him home, and placed him in the garden. Now the kids are fighting for it to be left to each one of them

Boy it looks like the damage is major. One dam is completely shot so I don't know how they'll raise the water level. I don't think the canal will be opening this year. Check these pics out.

looks like could be a few years at best to fix that. is there still commercial traffic on htis waterway

I may be way off base, but I don't think there was much commercial traffic on the Eire Canal even before the floods. The canal is a very cool part of American history, but it's use now is mostly recreational and tourism related.

I juet hope they don't decide to treat it the way they the ICW in places and just let it revert back to nature. The jobs and businesses that the canal supports are important to those communities, and I'd like one day to do the great loop myself.

Very little but there is commercial traffic. There was one fairly large (for the canal) cargo vessel that went from Oswego to Utica. I think that section is still open. Also a few tugs and barges use the canal. It's the eastern end around the Mohawk River (just before you get to the Hudson) that is really bad. That section used to be closed fairly often after major rains but would clear up in a week or two.

Is this like human years versus dog years? They say one year which is actually 7 years?
