Rogue Waves and Seiche Waves

Seiches are no problem. Storms and fronts will be something to watch. You'll be fine.

No matter how much you can prove to someone that sailing is safer than driving a car, that's not really the issue. From what I've seen, it's that driving is an "accepted risk", that we have already come to terms with. We know it's dangerous, but we're totally cool with it.

Sailing has risks, less than driving, but they are new and different, so people trip up on them.

But that's really what it comes down to. It's just a different risk, and even if it's less risky than driving a car or playing darts, it's still unknown.

What creates a freak or rogue wave is a combination of factors including wind duration, length of time of the wind blowing, fetch, etc. It would seem to me that lake Michigan would have limited fetch (how far the wind blows, creating waves over a long distance). I did some google searching and there is limited discourse on Lake Michigan and rogue waves but in my mind I compare it to the Straits of Georgia along the BC coast.

In the the very far lattitudes South by the antartic have a very long fetch as there is no land blocking the ocean as it swirls around the south pole. So in these latitudes, incredible swells with nasty rogue waves as they have thousands of miles to develop.
