Re: North Channel this Summer

Gore Bay on Manitoulin Island is close to the best cruising, gunkholing part of the North Channel and has the best marine facilities and everything you could want, including friendly people. Don't miss it.

Re: North Channel this Summer

If you head East past Gore Bay you will come to Little Current where there are docking facilities and a swing bridge that will open 15 minutes out of each hour during daylight hours to let boats pass. Between Little Current and Killarney is Bay of Fin which is a long fiord like bay in the rock. Follow the markers going in or you could become part of the Canadian shield. Back in there are fantastic places to anchor out. At the very end if your draft is shallow enough there is "the pool". The big cottage at the pool belongs or did belong to the Firestones. The pool is a great place to fish, pick blueberries and just relax. At Killarney you will find the Sportsman's Inn and a great meal if you want to treat the Admiral to dinner. Killarney is a boaters hangout where people take off to the north channel on the west or to Georgian Bay to the East.

Re: North Channel this Summer

[ want to head up there this year but don't know where to go or when. My boats draft is 3.5 so I am going to cheat and trailer it up. Any ideas about places and times?

The launch ramp in Gore Bay should take any vessel that is trailerable. The Town of Gore Bay is the gem of the North Channel with great places to walk, groceries, hardware, full marine store, mechanic service for just about anything and haul out. Sit on the hook or dock at the full service municipal marina which has great new free wifi and breakwater. Having stopped at marinas from Georgian Bay to Nova Scotia, east coast of US to Bermuda and The BVI, I have seen nothing better than the friendly marina and town of Gore Bay.

Re: North Channel this Summer

We just come back the North Channel 3 weeks ago. Yes the ice is gone, but the mosquitoes are horrendous. We have done the trip for 2 years now and go the end of june before school is out. Hardly anyone there yet, but the water is cold.
I've launched out of Little Current and Spanish. Both marinas are excellent. Traillering to Little Current is a bit tough because of the winding hilly road and you have to cross the swing bridge to get onto the island. The water depths are really high this year. About 2 feet above Datum. Enjoy.

The roads to and on Manitoulin Island are excellent. Yes, in places a little windy and hilly and very scenic. Trailers of all descriptions and sizes have travelled here for years and years from all over Canada and the USA. You can access Manitoulin by the Chicheemaun car, trailer, truck ferry from Tobermory or risk having to wait for the swing bridge for 5 or 10 minutes, which opens for about 10 minutes on the hour.
The 160 ft yacht Seaquest owned by Amway owners docked in Gore Bay several days ago.
The serious cruisers have of course been coming here for decades.
Check out the cruisers net which broadcasts daily on channel 71 at 9 a.m.

Just back from 3 weeks in North Channel. It was cold! But my fav place is the Turnbulls. Lots more little islands to dinghy around. Hotham is also great.

As they say " just do it"

The Turnbulls are the best. Good protection, good anchorage. Neat Islands. Just the best.

I'm writing from the North Channel, having come south from Superior. From my perspective it is HOT here. Water temps are over 18C (Superior was 3C). And there are people everywhere! But it is very beautiful.

There certainly are a lot of boats! And people! And mosquitoes!<grin>

Good to see you made it to the north channel Mike! We are currently at home in Windsor, left Blind River yesterday morning. We fly out early tomorrow a.m. for Pensacola to survey what we hope to be our new to us Caribbean cruiser. We will return to Blind River on Thursday, then head out late Friday with a couple of friends for the weekend. Will you still be in the north channel on the weekend? We are hoping to hang out in the Turnbulls for the weekend, it would be great to meet you!

Hi Gunk, we're in Richard's Landing doing a resupply and laundry after 21 days at sea (Superior). We're leaving tomorrow, but not sure where we'll head next. Might run down the North Channel or might just jump over to Port Elgin or even further south (an overnight sail). It will depend on winds ...we go with the easy tack.

Our boat's name is Pachina Mia. We're a 37' double-ender cutter with ratlines, windmill and windane hangin' off the back. We look pretty "classic", so if you see us give a shout on 16. What's your boat name and look? Love to connect if we're in the area.

Pachina Mia! Got it!

We're on Kewalo, a Bayfield 29, brownish uv covers on the foresails, cutter rig. We'll be around/in the Turnbulls next week. Currently here in Pensacola, Fl, very hot and humid. Will be back on Thursday, and hoping for a warm up in the north channel compared to July at least!

Hope to catch up with you before you head south, looking forward to meeting you and enjoying a cold one!

Hi Gunk, we're over at Desbarats marina. We ran into a diesel problem (injection pump) so are getting it solved. Not sure when we'll get going again, but we might be around Turnbull in a few days.

Mike:

Damn injectors! That sucks...hoping it all works out quickly and cheaply.

We'll be in the Turnbulls all this week, taking some friends out for the weekend, then my sister next weekend, so we'll be sticking close to the Turnbulls and Blind River.

Hope to catch up with you soon!

Mike:

How are you making out with the injector pump? Is all good now? We are heading to Gore Bay today, coming back to B.R. on Wednesday.

Re: North Channel this Summer

Hi Gunk, we got our pump working, and made it to Tolsmaville when this 25 knot blow came in. We're riding it out here. Now that we've lost so much time we're going to jump straight down Lake Huron as soon as it clears, so no chance of us meeting I think. Too bad, but I hope you're having a good season.
