Lords of the Lake: The Naval War on Lake Ontario, 1812-1814

Now that non-sailing season is nigh upon us, the subject book is an excellent read!

For those on Lake Ontario, it provides an incredible historical record of places with which you are familiar- at least in current context. In an age when we can freely cross from one side of the lake to another it's hard to imagine that our beautiful lake was once THE front line.

Looks like an interesting read. There is also a local author Susan Peterson Gateley that has written a great deal about Lake Ontario. She is up your way Tetepare in Fairhaven. That Lake has an amazing amount of history.

Yes, I saw Susan this summer and have some of her books.

Lords of the Lake really gives a great perspective of what an arms race on Lake Ontario looked like. As a sailor, it was interesting to read the chronology of their sailing season, from early April until early December- I mean, can you imagine sailing in storms during December with vintage clothing? Ugh. And to think that they regularly navigated the shoals and bars we we typically avoid- and they had no markers!
