Presqu'ile Bay is pretty thin even in the marked channel by October, too. Don't ask how I know this...

Re: Lake Ontario Meet 'n Greet Weekend

Hi Boulter, thanks!

Good luck finding a boat. I am glad I am only of average height. I can stand with room to spare in my 27'er...

My wife and I are 2 hours north on Belleville and hope to be based out of there one day. We will likely join the Bay of Quinte Yacht Club next year.

I am the proud owner of 1 functional Albacore, one broken Albacore, and one broken Laser. I am working on it. I actually got out in the Albacore once this year after getting it seaworthy, but I have had medical problems this summer and am now in the 6 week recovery period after abdominal surgery last week. Hopefully I will get out again in October.

As I am very tall, we will likely end up with a boat in the 34 to 39 foot range. A CS36T or Niagara 35 are likely target boats, but we are still learning.

So back to armchair sailing ...

With a steel boat you probably don't fear that as much as most.

Re: Lake Ontario Meet 'n Greet Weekend

True, but I ran aground in my fibreglass fin keeler...inside the marked channel...with 25-30 knots blowing. That boat draws about five feet, 10 inches. The steel boat draws about five-eight and has a "box" keel that is essentially a full keel. So you are correct: that's not usually a worry the way the fin keeler is.

Boulter:
How tall is very tall? We we looked at a Niagara 35 but it was sold out from under us in a back door deal.
I am 6'5" and we have a Hunter Legend 35. Good headroom but about one inch short of what I would really like. A Hunter Legend 35.5 is the same hull but may have a tad more headroom.
Good luck.

Well, I used to bill myself as 6'5", but the tape measure suggests 6'4" might be closer to the truth. Whatever the number, it is greater than the clearance in a Niagara 35, though the Niagara would probably be adequate for me personally. Now, my relatives, not so much. My brothers are 6'9" and likely my nieces and nephews will be up there too. The oldest is 12, so in about another 4 years we will start to see how their genetics plays out.

All middle-aged men should remeasure their height. They might be surprised. I was.
