Lake Nipigon

Has anyone done any sailing on this large lake north of Lake Superior? Gord, you may know something of this lake. A quick internet search revealed little about sailing here. Is the lake fairly undeveloped or is it crowded with cottages and motorboats? Second hand information I had from many years ago was that is was poorly charted with many shoals. The green/black sand beaches, cliffs, and towering pines do make it sound interesting to explore.

I fished Lake Nipigon many (30?) Years ago, but I donít recall much about it.
Itís a big lake (Ī60 x 90 miles), with very little road access, so remains mostly undeveloped & pristine (much like the Superior North shore, with which Steve is very familiar).
there's a couple of charter-fishing boats on the lake, and a few lodges.
As far as I know, the Lake is more or less uncharted (thereís a chart that shows a couple of bays); but Iíll check it out Saturday, when Iím taking a friend to buy some Superior charts.

Hi Steve

I don't think you're going to find any charts for Lake Nipigon from CHS.

http://geoportail-geoportal.gc.ca/ch...talBrowser.jsp

The entrance to the Nipigon river looks to be buoyed. I think the province publishes fishing maps of the various lakes, they should be easy to find.

I looked in my chart catalogue and Google Earth but there's not much info there either. Looks like it should be a good fishing lake but also looks rocky from the Google Earth pic.

Looks like it may be one of those places that require quite a bit of local knowledge. I will have to do some research as it is one of those places I have always wanted to check out.
