Lake MI - Sleeping Bear Dunes

This June, we are traveling from Sturgeon Bay WI to Michigan. Staying in Leland for a night, Charlevoix and then Petosky. I am looking for places to stop along the way and take in the view from the water. Anchor, have lunch, float a little. Any suggestions.

I especially want to get close to dunes. We have a 40 foot boat with 4 foot draft. Where should we go for Sleeping Bear Dunes? Sleeping Bear Bay or the Dunes on the open water? Thanks.

Firstly, welcome to the forum Kenlyn.

Here is a thread very close to you question with a bit of good input on it concerning the areas you are looking to travel: http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...es-171226.html

I would also suggest picking up a Great Lakes Cruising Club book, the sell them on Amazon, and are one of the best sources for boating info on the Great Lakes. Also Active Captain, which is an online source for info, that is user maintained for updated info all the time.

The search tool isn't always the best on this forum, but it could be a big help on other items as well...there is a very big database of info..

You can see spectacular dunes all the way from the top of Michigan to Indiana, the shore is mostly flat sand bottom and tall dunes. I live a mile from Lake Michigan and run along the beach often, so lucky to have these beautiful, tall dunes. We idle out the channel to anchor and swim, run up the dunes, I love this place. I've stopped in Leland for fuel, stayed a night in Frankfort, both great places. I draw 41" and had no problem, Frankfort was nicer as it is much more sheltered, bigger and more choices.

Outside Holland, there are speedboats anchored in a long line along the beach in the shallows on every nice weekend day. I was planning on joining them until I found this boat, have to anchor a little deeper and swim or dinghy in.

Speedboats and a sailboat or three... My kids love climbing the dunes there.

South Manitou island has a great anchorage that is open to the east. It is 15 miles west of Leland. Beautiful with a great view of the dunes.
