Hudson River Anchorages

Greets:

New to the forum so having some troubles searching for Hudson River Anchorages. Will be heading up river in early May from NY to Canal entrance and was wondering if anyone has recommendations for preferred anchorages along the Hudson as I will be single handing my boat to Hop-a-Nose marina where the mast will come down to enter the Canal. Im sure this has been discussed before, so if there are links to existing discussions these would be a helpfull alternative. Basically Im considering a slow pace of 3-4 days to enjoy the spring and Im sure the currents will be strong as well given the run off at this time of year.

best regards and thanks for any and all information in advance

Just below the Bear Mtn. Bridge there is an excellent anchorage to port. Good holding in mud and well-off the main shipping channel. I've used this a bunch of times.

Above Catskill Creek (Hopanose), there is a another good anchorage to starboard about 3 miles north at the entrance to Kinderhook Creek (?). There is a small marina there. Also muddy bottom with good holding. I've used this spot as well.

I can't recall any special anchorages between there and Albany, but suspect that if you see a likely spot, drop the hook. Just stay well out of the channel and be prepared to get rock & rolled if a big ship passes buy.

Be prepared to do an anchor watch at tide change. Fortunately the bottom found along most of the Hudson will allow your anchor to quickly re-set if it pulls free.

Have a safe trip!

Good info from Alan above.
Below that there is a place called 'Bowline Point' which is near Haverstraw that is a good, safe anchorage; little or no current and protected. Check 'Bowline Point, NY' on google maps and you will see what I mean.
You likely could get to Bowline Point in one days travel up river from NYC, if that is where you are starting out.
Cheap transient moorings are also available at Nyack Boat Club; around $25/night.

Good anchorages, West side south of the Tappan Zee bridge, Upper Nyack, Haverstraw Bay, outside Kingston, forget the name of the place might be Elgin, most anyplace on the west bank where there's shallower water, Catskill Creek.

Try this. You'll have to register to use it, but it's a wealth of information (on anchorages) ....

By the way, after you register click the interactive cruising guidebook tab and it will open up an interactive map, center it on the Hudson river and you'll have the information you need.
