I have shoveled 6 inches of snow off my boat in mid October to go diving. This is up in Lake Superior country.

I normally pull the sailboat early October and the dive boat the first week in November.

Depends on depth but early September has the warmest water of the summer. I would estimate surface water temps in late October to be between 48 and 56 F depending on the year.

So, even with a wetsuit, you are looking at a cold shock as you go in, eh? However, I guess that is the price to pay to get the pictures you posted of the wrecks.

In southern Lake Michigan, our marina starts hauling Oct 1 and completes by the 31st. We'll probably haul ours by the middle of October, since the lake can be pretty cranky by then.
