Great Lakes sailors?

Hello friends,

As we freeze amid winter's grip and dream of sailing this upcoming spring and summer, I'd certainly like to know how many Great Lake sailors are out there.

I'll start with myself, I sail s/v Booty Call, 1976 Oday 27' sailing waters:
Bay of Green Bay and upper part of Lake Michigan

Would be cool to do a rendezvous sometime if there were enough sailors around the area, but it's still great to see how many sailors are on any of the other Great Lakes!

Big Smiles
Mark R.

Currently sailing a Solaris Sunstream 40 cat (and a Cartright 36 pilothouse until I sell it) out of Bath, Ontario (near Kingston and the 1000 Islands) until heading south next fall. A little far for a rendezvous, I suspect, although I share your sentiments concerning 'winter's grip'.

Hello Southern Star!

I've heard some good cruising stories from up your way from other sailors I've been fortunately able to meet locally.

I've even heard of rendezvous too, but usually they've been down south of us, like Milwaukee or Chicago areas.

Two boats huh? wow.

We sail out of West Michigan--planning to go straight to the North Channel late in June and return late in August.

My sailing areas on the Great Lakes are the Apostle islands and the Canadian North Shore of Lake Superior and the North Channel and Georgian Bay on Lake Huron. I have been in all of the Lakes but these are the places I return to again and again. I live in Minneapolis so I do a fair amount of sailing on the city lakes with my daysailor. I also wet my bottom on Gull Lake near Brainerd and Lake Pepin on the Mississippi River.

WELL Sandy and I are in S.W. Florida for a couple of months, and it is not all that warm here right now. But the forecast is looking petty good.

I'm here sailing out of Grand Haven on the east side of Lake Michigan. I hope to make it over to Door County sometime in August of this coming season.

Anyone have any good Lake Michigan crossing stories to tell or websites relating the experience? I love reading about local sailing adventures.

Steve,
I'm planning on doing the North Shore of Superior this summer. What have you found to be the best time, weather and bug wise. I'll be dragging my Catalina 25 up to Thunder Bay from south of the TC.

Ellis:
Weather wise, June & July.
Bugwise, September
When we only had three weeks, on the N. Shore, we'd do the July / June split (2wk in 1mo, & 1wk 1wk in other mo, depending ...)
Don't you dare launch from (or visit) Thunder Bay, and not let me know.

where's the "TC"?

Gord,
Twin Cities, Minneapolis-St. Paul. Actually I'm at Wanamingo, MN, between Minneapolis and Rochester. I usually spend a week in the Apostles and sometimes sail Lake Pepin, in the Mississippi.
