That's our home stomping grounds. There's a few places you can and cannot go. What size is your boat, draft, air draft etc.?

Re: Galop Canal navigation

Ok. Upbound you enter the navigable part of the old Galop canal just west of Cardinal. Downbound you enter the "North Channel". See attached GoogleEarth grab.

There's not much else of the old canal you can explore. The section from Cardinal to Iroquois is too shallow and full of snags for a boat your size.

If you need a marina there's one you can get to on upper side of the Iroquois Locks. See second attached GoogleEarth grab.

If you can unstep your mast and your air draft is under 8' 6" you can get under the damn at Iroquois and not have to pay the Seaway locking fees. That's the only lock that applies to though.

There's a marina along the old canal locks at Iroquois on the lower side of the dam. It's a nice spot. Plenty of deep water.

Have a safe trip.

Re: Galop Canal Navigation

Thought I'd reopen this thread rather than start a new one.

We ran aground in the gallop canal today, I'm the second sailboat I'm aware of who's been aground this fall in here.

Currently, the first set of buoys (about 1/2 mile into the canal is a set of three buoys! Confusing. Starting from the left there is a red buoy, then a green then a larger gap then a red. This is a red right returning situation so the green is on your port side!

I have no idea what the other red means. I knew there was only a 50/50 chance of choosing the right channel, picked wrong but was going dead slow and was able to back off under my own power. Sorry, no pic, I was kind of busy at the time.

Second time I've been aground this year, my first was going to the western tie up wall in the Murray canal.
