Erie, Oswego Canals, Return Loop

Spring is in the air, or at least in my mind. Starting in a couple three months I would guess that the Great Lake sunshine sailors, who sailed south for the winter, will be making their return north. I would like to take a couple days and visit somewhere along the canal and watch part of this migration. Within the next couple years I plan to make this journey myself. I am looking for suggestions on the timing of this visit as well as the best places to set back watch and enjoy.

I would suggest observing at Waterford; the boats pass by whether via Erie or Champlain canal (to /from St Lawrence). It's a great town with visitor center and facilities for transients; great views of/from the locks; u can see the remants of the old Champlain canal that runs thru town. Wait til the spring runoff subsides; the Erie canal was closed for a month til July. Last July 4th there was a steamboat festival. They have a tour boat that takes visitors into the lock (#2) and back.

Re: Erie, Oswego Canals, Return Loop

Locks open May 1st most years, unless crazy high water or lock issues. I stop in Watertown around the April 30th and then go and tie up in front of Champlain canal lock 1 the night before it opens. May 1st & 2nd I do the 12 locks and get to Burlington late on the 3rd. I tend to be one of the earliest in the migration north. I would guess that May and June are the high point for returning cruisers, but most are retired and not in a huge hurry.

Boatpoker. Tremendous.......Thank you. This is exactly the kind of information I was looking for. I hope to start exploring from the Lake Erie side and head east this season. My main boat is a sail with a 62 foot mast, so I wouldn't be able to get very far. My second is a 22 ft Grady White. I will begin my exploring with her. Then at some point when I'm ready to traverse the complete route, I'll lay The mast on the deck head east then south. More then likely head the other direction and return through the canals. Traveling in the small boat I may need to find over night opportunities with land lodging. Most of the time we'll be traveling with another couple.
