Erie Canal

The Erie canal is not doing any official updates about the closed status. Wondering if there is anyone there with first hand info on what is going on.

Re: Erie canal

By the looks of some pictures I've seen, this year's season is over for the Canal. I see today the whole Oswego canal is closed too but that's due to high water and not structural damage. The Canal around Amsterdam looks a real mess with the dam gone. I understand foamcore (one of the members here) was in the Canal and turning back. Maybe he'll add something. If you're headed south the best bet seems to be to ship the boat to the Chesapeake.

Re: Erie canal

That pretty much confirms what I've been hearing.Spoke to a marina owner in Oswego today. She had heard that one of the lock doors downstream had been torn off. Disappointing that the Canal office won't provide any info other than boilerplate closing notice. Looks like there is a truck in my future.

Re: Erie canal

I think they are still in turmoil up there... give them a bit. But I think its safe to say it will not be operational anytime soon

According to the canal site, Governor Cuomo Announces Erie Canal to Open for Two Weeks starting Nov 22nd through Dec 8th. New York State Canals: Press Releases
Is anyone still planning on heading south using this route?

Too late (and cold) for most. Think they're doing this to let the trapped boats out. A couple of boats I know left and trucked the boats from Sodus to Annapolis.
