Chicago harbors question

Hopefully this is the right forum to be posting this in...

I am looking to buy a boat in the Chicagoland area. Unfortunately things got really busy over the winter and I had to put off looking until now. As I am checking out boats, I am starting to wonder about the availability of slips or mooring cans. I would really like to end up in one of the Chicago harbors.

I have talked to a few people and the stories seem mixed. I have heard from some that the waiting list can be over a year long, and from others that they bought a boat, requested a slip, and got one. For at least the first season, I would be perfectly happy with a mooring can, but is it even too late in the season to be able to get that?

Yes there is a waiting list maybe 1yr or so.At one time there was a lottery. Reefpoint marina in racine Wi. has plenty of slips.
