Re: WIFI ANTENNA BOOSTER

Is that a Bad Boy Unleashed shown in the photo and is that also included in the $150 price?

Re: WIFI ANTENNA BOOSTER

Looks like a good system especially with the metal jacket instead of plastic, etc. Also it looks very similar to the Ubiquiti Bullet system - except the Bullet needs accessories which add to the price before you get to a package similar to the Badboy. And the BadBoy advertises 4Watt (4000mw) of power versus the 1 watt (1000mw) of the Ubiquiti Bullet. Does anybody know if there is a legal limit on how much power a wifi antenna can output? And what the effect of that much power has on the wifi signal?

But all of the powered wifi antenna systems are restrained by the "line-of-sight" requirement between the antenna and the shore station. So a method of getting the antenna elevated as much as possible off the deck helps increase their effectiveness. I know cruisers with the Ubiquiti that mount the antenna on the top of the mizzen mast or near the top and then use the Cat5E cable to run down the inside of the mast to the computer.

" Does anybody know if there is a legal limit on how much power a wifi antenna can output? And what the effect of that much power has on the wifi signal?"
Yes. There are different limits for US citizens, US ham radio licensees, and in other nations. The limit is on "effective radiated power" which combines transmitter power plus any boost or degradation in the entire system (transmitter, line antenna).

Last I knew the FCC legal limit for civilians in the US was ONE WATT, ERP. For hams, substantially higher.

The good news is "who knows?" the bad news is something like a $10,000 fine when someone files an interference complaint. Software may give you options to reduce ERP when you need to.

Re: WIFI ANTENNA BOOSTER

WiFi is limited to 1 watt for use with a directional antenna, and 4 watts with an omnidirectional antenna.

Re: WIFI ANTENNA BOOSTER

The transmission power for 2.4Ghz 'WiFi' is actually limited by the EIRP (equivalent isotropically radiated power) with lots of details covered in FCC Rules and Regs title 47 part 15.247 provides details on limitations of EIRP.

The most common WiFi limit is +36dBm - which equates to 4W. However, this is TOTAL emissions, and any gain of an antenna must be accounted for. A Bullet attached to a 6dB antenna leaves only +30dBm of transmission power allowed - or approx 1W. Use a more common 8dB antenna and you are already over the limit (though even the direct coupling gives a 1-2db loss - so . . maybe OK)

So, advertising a '4W Power' is perhaps a bit misleading. Of course you could use a zero-gain antenna, but just having a big mouth (powerful transmission) does nothing for radio signals if they do not also come with good ears (receiving gain)

BTW: Europe is MUCH lower and very aggressive seeking out violators I hear - more so in some countries. Australia of all places is a bit higher

in the USA.

Re: WIFI ANTENNA BOOSTER

BTW: I just looked over the Bad Boys web site, and they are correctly claiming 4W total power. And their offerings are based on the Bullet or other Ubiquiti products. Will say they seems to have taken the time to write / modify custom firmware directly in the devices - making it simpler to use. AND noted they also guide users to the correct power limits based on the country selected. Looks like a nice setup IMHO.

Re: WIFI ANTENNA BOOSTER

Of course the picture shows ubiquiti products... A bullet and a nano. You're paying for pre configured stuff and a manual for non geeks. Given that the manuals for networking gear are written for engineers its a pretty good deal, unless you're a network engineer of course...
