Wanted free monohull...see details

Being on the coast the last few weeks working. I need a boat out there. Looking for something I can weekend on 25-32'. Condition isn't real important, I can fix most things. I don't want a nice boat because I'm going to leave it on a hook most of the year. I'd like it to be functional to sail at least. Fiberglass tent camping is ok.

So heres my requirements
Located between Maine and Louisiana.
Floats on it's own with minimal pump assistance.
Fiberglass
Inboard, or at least had one at one time
I'm avoiding swing keels.
6' headroom

My target boat would be an Out Island 28 or older Hunter 27 or 30.

There have to be a few rotting away in marinas nowadays.

I've already appeased the powerboat gods. They'll understand I'm going back to my roots.

You could end up with a very expensive liability.

Get one free, then you decide its a waste of time, how do you get rid of it? Its a huge bit of rubbish. You have to wait for a boat crusher to come to your port and then pay for it to be crushed, removed and put into land fill.

Free sounds great. Till you get a $5,000 bill..........

mark,
your being a little pessimistic. It's easier than that.
1) rent a dumpster, a big one.
2) rent a Bobcat
3) crush the boat and insert into dumpster.

Would you like pictures? The last one cost about $471.00.

Thanks everyone for the leads. I've sent some emails out. We'll see what happens.

Yup...although it is illegal to dump plastic in the oceans. This makes me wonder. Would it then be legal to scuttle a ferro cement boat, a steel or aluminum boat but not a fiberglass boat? If a plastic boats sinks, does it then make it okay to scuttle it?

Did the guy in the Latitude 38 article break the law by scuttling his boat a few hundred miles outside SF?

If you are referring to the wood boat, CSY posted it in here as well. If I remember correctly, CSY said it's already been hauled off. It didn't exactly meet the criteria NM posted, anyway. It's quite a stretch from a 25'-32' fiberglass to 50' wood.

Yeah, that boat big 57' motor sailor did not quite match the criteria and it is now being hauled away in dumpsters.

Although I have been offered another free boat at the same yard a few years ago: A 29' Pearson sloop with an inboard diesel. I could not use the boat but offered it to Gord in case he got a second wind.
