Re: two West Marine Folding Bikes

Nope. The original Port Runner was not recalled and has no problems that I've heard of. West Marine recalled the Jetty Express II and The Port Runner II, different bikes, for potential frame problems.

Re: two West Marine Folding Bikes

Yes, the recall is for the Port Runner II, which, as a comparison of the photos shows, has a different frame. Mine are the original version, bought shortly before they were replaced by the "II" version.

Re: two West Marine Folding Bikes

many boaters are using these bikes but they are not safe imho. go to wm for your refund. if you are 5'10' or taller you cannot proper adjust them and if you are over 180# you over load them.

It is amusing to me that so many people who are uninvolved in the transaction, feel a need to bless others with their uninformed and incorrect opinion on the item...everyone is now blessed.

West Marine Folding Bikes recall?

Well, the volunteered information about recalls is sort wrong but also sort of right. I spoke at length with West Marine customer service this morning; the actual recall is only for the Port Runner II, because there have been failures of some part of the frame, causing accidents. All online info I have seen refers specifically to the recall for the PR II.
The earlier version of the Port Runner (like my bikes) has a different frame and has not had failures; there has been no declared recall.
However, (I am paraphrasing customer service's comments here) West Marine will replace the Port Runner bikes anyway, although they don't have to, just to be on the safe side. They will replace them with the "Back Bay" a 7-speed folding bike, retail $399.99. You need to document your original purchase.
Considering this, I'll exchange my bikes. Probably I'll offer the new ones for sale when I have them.

West Marine policy on recall or return Port Runner Bikes

Following the advice of WM customer service, I took my bikes to the local WM store for return under the recall; I was told it covered the original Port Runners as well as the PR II model. "Not so." said the store employee.
My second conversation with customer service later that same day resulted in a WM statement of policy directly opposite the first one: no recall applies on original Port Runner bikes, hence no returns. After some discussion, I was told that I could return them on the basis of being dissatisfied with them, which I was, as I couldn't readily sell them due to recall concerns.
Proof of original purchase is required, refund is in the form of gift card.
