St4000 control head

Cleaning out. I found a st 4000 control head. I don't have the wheel pilot, but the control head worked when I removed it last year. I have the manual as well. It say it was purchased in 1990. Make an offer.

Re: St4000 control head

Afaik the 4000 uses a separate flux compass. The control head has all the control electionics except the compass. This control head is NLA and Raymarine will not fix. Heard they may be repairable but don't know of anyone that works on them. If you have 4000 or 4000 plus, might want to pick this one up as spare in case yours dies.

Re: St4000 control head

I have a 4000 and the fluxgate is indeed separate.
Imho, the most common problem with this autopilot (mine included) is bad solder connections on the motor driver transistors resulting in drastic course changes or full lock steering without any (or slow) return to course.
The problem arises because the factory provided no accommodation via a simple half loop in the leads where the transistors connect to the circuit board.
Heating and cooling cracks these connections over time.

Next time mine fails (or when I get around to it), I'll add some extra length to these transistor leads and loop them to allow expansion and contraction without stressing the solder connections.
