Original Signed 1983 Americas Cup Poster

I was in Newport Rhode Island in 1983 for the Americas Cup and purchased a poster there. I thn got Dennis Conner to sign on the lft side next to 'Liberty' and secured signatures of Alan Bond, Ben Lexcen, John Bertrand and 5 or 6 other crew members of 'Australia II'.

I am now offerring this original poster for sale.

Looking for realistic offers.

My email is tp5255@gmail.com.

Thanks

Wow, I must be completely ignorant about the value to things in the sailing collectables market. Who knew?

LOL - maybe the wrong target audience here. We are a pretty frugal bunch and $7,500 would go along ways toward new sails or electronics. We argued for days over whether or not to spend $200 on fixing a winch!

Goodness, gracious! Best of luck in marketing your object. You were soliciting offers and not asking for thoughts of the value: please donít take offense with the following thoughts. I do a fair amount of buying and selling collectibles from retailers and via auctions. Not too many posters other than railway and airline travel themes, but ...... Given that the interest in sailboat racing is limited and that the signatures are of men still on this mortal coil (I think), if I were to make an offer it would be substantially lower than your figure. Good luck

Re: Original Signed 1983 Americas Cup Poster

Gosh!! $7500 for a loosing poster!!
I was selling Bolle sunglasses here in Perth Western Australia when you Yanks came back to wrest the cup from us - and did so. They asked for Bolle's as they found the climatic conditions - an extremely clean environment - with sparkling Mediterranean seas - that the reflection, was burning their eyeballs out!
Conner played the game brilliantly - 'luffing' through the heats as if the boat was having difficulties - then 'breezed' (excuse the pun) home in the last races!!
We sponsored them with glasses, but as they had a deal with Ray Ban on entering and leaving port - they would use them only when on the course.
Of course - ('scuse me again) after sending a boat out to take film - we got an incredible amount of advertising - to the chagrin of Ray Ban.
The crew signed a poster for me - with a big splashed 'Conner' across the centre - and I was often told to sell the poster which I duly had mounted. Wonder what it would have been worth.
I say 'would have' as I sadly lost it and all I own in a bush fire - which I emphasise with those of you who are battling ones now.
Good luck to you all.

Re: Original Signed 1983 Americas Cup Poster

A good approach may be to contact two of the expert appraisers on Antiques Road Show:

1. Alphonse Mucha, who does old posters

2. Laura Dunbar, who does sports memorabilia.

Both have many years of experience in their fields and are used to appraising rare big-ticket items. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they have already appraised/marketed a poster similar to yours.

They can also advise you on the quality of the signature, overall condition of the poster and rarity, all of which factor into the retail price.

A factor may be the specialness of the 1983 Cup series, the first time the NY Yacht Club lost the cup. I can easily recall the mystery surrounding the new winged keel of the challenger. I also recall how Dennis Conner, truly one of the great racing sailors of all time and sailing a significantly slower boat, still took the series to the 7th and final race before succumbing. Great series, maybe the best ever.

Good luck with your poster.

Re: Original Signed 1983 Americas Cup Poster

If the poster is worth more than a couple of hundred bucks when sold through a maritime collectibles market I would be shocked. That said, thereís no crime in asking...

My thoughts, too. It was signed by Dennis Connor, not Jesus Christ!

Lets see... new mainsail - 7500 dollars, bit of paper with some dude's name on it -7500 dollars... what's a sailor to do when decisions are so hard?
