Re: Hood Seafurl 2 3250 for parts

Thanks. This is good, but I needed the swivels for the bearing races.
Workaround: Put the worn races in the tack swivel, which has less stress than the head and halyard swivels, and use an 11/64" ball instead of 3/16"
Spins like a top now.

I know that this is an old post but do you remember or have pictures of when you disassembled it?
I'm especially interested to know how difficult it is to remove the races.
Mine run's freely without load but under load it binds and I get a halyard wrap.
Thanks
Shane

Re: Hood Seafurl 2 3250 for parts

Sorry, no useful photos, but I found the attached files helpful. The parts list confirmed the the size of the SS and Delrin balls.
The Delrin balls act as spacers between the bearing balls.
Disassembly required slacking the backstay so I could disconnect the headstay. I hitched the headstay to keep some tension on it so the foils wouldn’t buckle.
The set screws in the drum were a hassle. I think I drilled out at least one of them. Be very careful not to destroy the threads.
Taking apart the swivels was straightforward, but definitely something you want to do below decks or at home.

The problem with wear is that the stressed balls will become smaller as they wear into the races, which will change the working radius of the race - I’m talking about the approximately 3/32 radius curve that the 3/16 diameter balls run in. Simply replacing the worn balls won’t work because they will not fit the worn races anymore. That’s why I chose to put the most worn races in the tack swivel and the least stressed races in the head and halyard swivels. A little thought will tell you which races bore the greatest loads (one in the head swivel and one in the halyard swivel.) The other two were just there for guidance. The tack races had hardly any wear because they don’t carry the weight of the sail. They were interchangeable with the head/halyard races, and all came out easily enough.
The 11/64” balls worked perfectly in the worn races in the tack swivel.

Reassembly requires something sticky - to keep the balls in place - that will wash out with water. Non abrasive toothpaste Will do fine.

I have balls leftover, Delrin and SS.

Re: Hood Seafurl 2 3250 for parts

Thanks for the reply, how easy was it to get the races out. Did you need a special tool/mandrel and press or are they easily tapped out?
I've a binding spot when the halyard and tack are lined up and am guessing that the races are worn at this point and guessing that doing what you did might work.
I'm assuming you could pull the swivel off over the swaged on eye right?
It's a bummer because I had the mast down last month but it runs smoothly without load.

No special tools required.

Swivels came off over the swaged eye, but the drum has to come off first.
Refer to the exploded view, item 10 “full dog point set screw”.
Those gave me the most difficulty. If they are stubborn, drill them out. You might have to drill the full length of the screw, but something less than the full diameter. Since the dog point is much less than the full diameter, it will detach when the bit reaches it.

If you have to drill, be careful. A left hand drill bit may help the screw back out without damage to the threads in the drum.

Guiter - I know this is an old post, but did you ever find the pinion gear? Looking to rebuild my 3250 and was wondering if you found a source for parts.

Thanks,

Steve
