General Guidelines for Posting Classified Ads:
As stated in the Cruisers Forum Rules, this Classified Ad Forum is offered to members as a benefit of
membership. Below, are a few things members should keep in mind before
posting an ad, both to maintain a useful Classified Ads Forum and to protect members from unscrupulous people who may read these ads.
Never post personal information in an ad, such as your email address or phone number. In addition to having your personal info harvested by spambots, you run the risk of being contacted by someone with criminal intent. While you may theoretically increase your potential market by allowing non-members to contact you, you also increase the risk that you will be contacted by someone you will soon wish did not have your contact information.
The safest method of establishing contact between seller and potential buyer is through the Cruisers Forum Private Message system. If, after initial contact, both parties wish to exchange personal contact information, the PM system provides a safe conduit to do so.
Ads placed in the Classified Ads Forum must be related to the
scope of Cruisers Forum; i.e. related to the life aquatic. You may consider your Winnebago your "land yacht," but don't post an ad here when you're desperate to sell it. Selling real estate is also not allowed.
Do not post an ad in the Classified Ads Forum that is on behalf of a non-member or even on behalf of another
member. Someone who is already a
member can place his/her own ad, and non-members must join Cruisers Forum and post their own ad.
Do not hijack another member's ad. For example, if a member has posted an ad offering a
spinnaker for sale, don't add a post to his thread stating that you have a
spinnaker you'd like to get rid of also. Start your own.
Do not post an ad in the Classified Ads Forum that directs readers to another
sale site where you are also offering the item(s), such as eBay or Craigslist. Hyperlinks to off-site ads will be deleted without notice.
Similarly, hyperlinks to off-site webpages that are
commercial entities will also be deleted without notice. You may, however, link to a non-commercial webpage - such as a personal blog - if it contains a more in-depth description, additional information or pictures. We are a non
commercial site and your help maintaining it that way is appreciated.
Please provide vitally important information in your ad that will save potential buyers from wasting their (and your) time. For example, if you're trying to sell a 50kg
anchor in Hobart, Tasmania, an excited reader in Helsinki,
Finland who is actively looking for a 50kg
anchor might be sorely disappointed once he finally learns the item's location long after thinking his search was over.
The
internet is the proverbial Fountain of Youth - digitally, death can be defied. What does this mean? It means your ad can run forever, theoretically, and you may be PMed years after you last laid eyes on your
Catalina 27 asking if it's still available. As a courtesy to fellow CF members, please post "SOLD" in your ad or contact a site moderator if the item has been sold, or is otherwise no longer available.
The Prefix Feature
Above the list of threads, you will see a box with (any prefix) in it. Clicking on that box will cause a pop-up menu to appear which is a list of all the prefixes that are attached to the threads posted to the Forum. The meaning of each of the prefixes is self-explanatory.
Clicking on an item in the prefix menu will pull up a list of all the posts that have been prefixed with that descriptive word or words, such as
For Sale or Want to Buy. This makes it unnecessary to scroll through all of the ads in the Classified Ads Forum to find those that fall into the category you're seeking.
If you're posting an ad, it must be prefixed before it will be accepted for submission. All of the ads currently on view in the Classified Ads Forum have these clickable prefixes, making clear to readers what category the ad falls into. For that reason, it is unnecessary to put the same words designating the category into the thread title.
We do not allow old ads to just linger in the Forum forever. All ads date-stamped prior to the past sixty days are moved to the Classifieds Archive, a sub-forum, and are still available for reading only. No new posts can be made to those old ads.
If you had placed an ad that is still relevant, but which has been moved to the Archive due to its age, you must re-compose and re-post your ad. It will be to the benefit of all members who use the Classified Ads Forum to check their ad periodically to be sure it is still on the list of active ad threads.
