Electric motor conversion
I am looking for a 10+kw electric conversion kit that someone is selling due to upgrade etc. I have a 45' LOA Bruce roberts ketch that I am repowering with electric now that the perkins 4.154 is shot. I got her this way and while I can repower with diesel... this is the perfect time to go electric and just lean on a diesel generator when needed.

I’ll update my profile shortly but i’m located in St Pete Fl
Here is a picture of her. She got battered in Irma and sat for the last year. I picked her up a short time ago and debated on repairing the perkins... not worth the effort and i’ve wanted to go electric for some time, nows the chance!

Re: Electric motor conversion
Are you actually thinking that 10 kw will be adequate power for that boat?
Not wanting to start yet another EP argument, but that seems seriously underpowered to me.

Re: Electric motor conversion
10kw+. That would be the minimum I’d go with. 20kw should put her easily at hull speed though. I have several other boats so if I want to go fast i’ll jump on them. The power side is to just get her in and out of the marina and going 5kts or so if there is no wind
You’re definitely right about 10kw being on the underpowered side though

I would tend to agree, just based on the math 10kw is equivalent to 13.5 HP.
Not bringing you down, I find the subject fascinating. How did you figure out using 10kw?

Re: Electric motor conversion
I have found 10kw to be a common setup people have so if someone is upgrading i’ll take that or greater off their hands. I can always upgrade the motor once I get her going and get the full electric bug!

Re: Electric motor conversion
The current perkins 4.154 that i’m pulling out is in the 50hp range and it would push her past hull speed before it died. Not worth it to rebuild her once I started diving into it

Hi, I find it intriguing that you have apparently calculated that it will be cheaper to install an electric system, motor, controls, batteries and alternative power generation than rebuilding one of the most common industrial motors around.
I wish you well and hope to read more on the conversion as it happens.

Re: Electric motor conversion
Do you have plans for the old Perkins? I have a Westerbeke W58 which is the same block as the Perkins and might be able to use some of the parts.

Never said I found it cheaper, simply that i’d like to go electric. I rebuild marine diesels daily and in my opinion this specific one is not worth the rebuild when i’m wanting to go electric anyways.
As for what i’m doing with it once shes out, I have no use for it. Either ebay or pm me if you’re interested in her. She has no compression on 3 cylinders and I bought the rebuild kit, started pulling to do an inhull but have decided to go electric.

Fair enough but I am still looking forward to following the project, hopefully with pics as well as descriptions. Cheers.
