3 cans of Dupont R-12 Freon

I have 3 - 1000g cans of R-12 Freon made by Dupont that I have no need for. Our refrigeration has been converted to MP-66 Freon.

The price on the bottles says $420 per bottle, would like to get $600 or best offer.

Local pick up only, we are located in Pensacola, Florida.

Any purchaser needs to be fully aware of, comply with and be eligible to purchase R12 as per EPA guidelines available here -

Has R12 gone up that high? Last time I checked it had still only gone up to $50/lb, which would be about $110/kg.

Re: 3 cans of Dupont R-12 Freon

I really do not know. This R-12 came with the boat, and the $420 is what is marked on each can. The previous owner gave them to me.

Our unit is now converted to MP-66, so we have no need for it. The refrigeration guy who worked on our frig was not surprised at the price marked on the cans.....

All new stuff to me, our previous boat had an icebox.

R12 is illegal to import or use into Australia. Obviously not in the US

I believe R-12 was phased out in mid 90's, so very possible the $420 is actually $4.20? Assuming of course the cans are more than 20 yrs old

In the US you are required to have an EPA license to either purchase or use R-12.

Re: 3 cans of Dupont R-12 Freon

Hans-
Not quite true. In the US you are required to hold an EPA certification OR a resale license. That's generally a city or state resale tax ID. End users must have the EPA certification, but any licensed business is allowed to buy it for resale purposes.

This is also another big "know your vendor" issue, there was a lot of outright counterfeit R12 and contaminated R12 (scavenged from old systems) being sold into the US and other nations.

And of course, shipping compressed gasses can be fun. (Hazmat.)

Might be, I have a few small cans I bought when I was in Korea in 99 / 2000.
Only the developed countries weren't allowed to manufacture and use it. Don't know if that is still true now.
I am Licensed HVAC for what its worth

Re: 3 cans of Dupont R-12 Freon

R12 has gone up everywhere, because there are only two sources left:

-Barn finds, so to speak, and
-Recycled product

Ignoring the third, the "stuff that works for a while" but is counterfeit or mixed goods.

So I think even in the DR, folks have upped the price of old cans.

But a lot of shops just don't want to mess with R12 anymore, since each gas they carry requires a separate set of fill tanks, waste tanks, hoses and gauges and everything else. So they just say "Oh, that's a hundred bucks a pound!" and usually tell you that need about twice what you really need, to really scare you off. Instead of just saying "Nah, we don't want to bother with that anymore."

Those are also the shops that like to use expensive refrigerant to test systems, when the real pros are using relatively cheap nitrogen for the pressure testing. Pretty much the same stuff they put in your tires at exorbitant and mystical prices these days.

Re: 3 cans of Dupont R-12 Freon

I would advise caution in selling your R-12, You ( the wholesaler ) are responsible for EPA compliance and record keeping. The purchaser must hold EPA certification type 609 ( automotive ) to purchase R-12 in mall cans.

Anyone selling is considered to be the wholesaler, including classified ads and internet sales and is legally responsible for compliance and recordkeeping.

There is a real nice bounty for informing on improper or unlicensed use, so make sure to photocopy the purchasers type 609 certification, and ID, and retain with a copy of the sales invoice.

Good luck
