some very interesting things can be found in ship graveyards--and they are rare places--very rare, due to zoning and environmental laws

Ha ha, I see what you mean about the comments, lol. Asbestos is not dangerous when wet, it's when it is friable, floating in the air and you breathe it that the danger comes in. In India, labor is cheap and there is no OSHA so finding someone to do the work just for the scrap here is a daunting proposition. If it has been cleaned up, I'm sure it cost quite a bit.

So much for one of the comments in the original link. Doesn't look like its been cleaned up to me at all. In my commercial diving days in college whenever we worked in that area the water was incredibly nasty. The slightest cut or scratch on a finger would feel like you're soaking your hand in battery acid or lemon juice.

Tradition.
It was a graveyard in a generally unseen corner of NY harbor for a long long time and once folks became aware of it, the unspoken stopper is simply that it could cost an incredible amount to clean it up, so it is left alone. AFAIK it has not been actively used to dump anything for decades.

i still lived in long island when the verrazano narrows bridge opened--that was when the ferries last ran to staten island---late 1960s...

Nope. They're still running from the Battery terminal, every day. Newer ferries, but service never stopped. And if you ever, ever, interrupt their runs across the harbor, you will find the full wrath of every "authority" in the Port comes down on you.

There are places in the world where ships are run aground and scrapped on the beach. Not all ships are scrapped in this way. There are many places that scrap them in environmentally sound and safe methods for the workers who dismantle them.

ahaa i thought they stopped around the time the ggp opened to use bridge instead of ferry boats, as no one wanted to use ggp...lol....i am glad that wasnt true---the ferries were coooool..i remember them from before ggp was built..circle line was also cool....

havent ships and boats and that stuff been dumped there since the gods were puppies???
and this is only new york city, staten island---the dump predates all laws of disposal for ships and boats, as i recall....
