Re: What is Your Favorite Quote?

"Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth; whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul; whenever I find myself involuntarily pausing before coffin warehouses, and bringing up the rear of every funeral I meet; and especially whenever my hypos get such an upper hand of me, that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people's hats off--then, I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can."

Student to his perfectionist instructor: Would you like the main too tight or too loose?

Ok ... if one is to be absolutely accurate you would have to have a normal distribution of testicles within the male population. However we would also need to know the number of gender indeterminate persons and post-op transsexuals. This would give us a standard deviation and level confidence regarding this vital statistic.

Re: What is Your Favorite Quote?

A few of my favorites... Some on boats, some on life in general

Navigation And Life At Sea

"What a picturesque spot! I wonder where we are!" (Kate, Pirates of Penzance)

"Cruising has two pleasures. One is to go out in wider waters from a sheltered place. The other is to go into a sheltered place from wider waters." (Howard Bloomfield)

"I don't know who named them swells. There's nothing swell about them. They should have named them awfuls." (Hugo Vihlen)

"Being hove to in a long gale is the most boring way of being terrified I know." (Donald Hamilton)

"He that will not sail till all dangers are over must never put to sea. (Thomas Fuller)

Dealing With Emergencies

He who lets the sea lull him into a sense of security is in very grave danger." (Hammond Ines)

"Houston, we've had a problem here." (James Lovell)

"No plan survives contact with reality." (Matt Forbeck)

"If you can't repair it, maybe it shouldn't be on board."(Lin and Larry Pardey)

"Well, that escalated quickly." (Ron Burgandy)

"A bad plan that works... isn't a bad plan." (John Ringo)

On Culture Shock and Life Ashore

"Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas any more." (Dorthy Gale)

"I am a man of fixed and unbending principles, the first of which is to be flexible at all times." (Everett Dirksen)

"Never get outta the boat!... Never get outta the boat!" (Jay "Chef" Hicks)

"The two most common elements in the universe are hydrogen, and stupidity. (Harlan Elison)

Boat Drinks

"If you kill a few brain cells with some rum... It makes the rest work a little harder." (Cap' Couillon)

"The only traditions of the Royal Navy are rum, sodomy and the lash." (Winston Churchill)

"I want a boat that drinks 6, eats 4, and sleeps 2" (Ernest K Gann)

"To the question, When were your spirits at the lowest ebb? the obvious answer seemed to be, When the gin gave out." (Sir Francis Chichester)

"Why is the rum always gone?" (Captain Jack Sparrow)

Just clearing up the perpetration of a half-truth:

I've since realised it is only MALE mules which are not fertile, and apparently this is a not uncommon issue with hybrids (mammals? animals?).

Re: What is Your Favorite Quote?

Here's a good one that I think most sailors will appreciate from Ellen Goodman, an American journalist and Pulitzer Prize-winning syndicated columnist:

“Normal is getting dressed in clothes that you buy for work and driving through traffic in a car that you are still paying for - in order to get to the job you need to pay for the clothes and the car, and the house you leave vacant all day so you can afford to live in it.”
― Ellen Goodman
