I kindly disagree with you. The line is more appropriate to Gandolf than anyother character in the book, and anyone who doesn't know who Gandolf is or what Lord of the Rings is probably wouldn't get the quote.

I prefer to attribute it to the character who was given the charge of saying those words -- Gandolf. in a good book, the characters become real to you.
