"It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent. It is the one most adaptable to change" Charles Darwin

“Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent." Calvin Coolidge

Re: What is Your Favorite Quote?

Maybe I offered this one before but still one of my favorites told to me by an inexperienced female crew member when I asked if she had learned anything on an overnight trip with a fellow cruiser:
'Lines are for boats, ropes are for sex'.
True story! Phil

I kindly disagree with you. The line is more appropriate to Gandolf than anyother character in the book, and anyone who doesn't know who Gandolf is or what Lord of the Rings is probably wouldn't get the quote.

I prefer to attribute it to the character who was given the charge of saying those words -- Gandolf. in a good book, the characters become real to you.

"There are exceptions to this terminology, so you can ignore the oft-repeated pedantry that 'there are no ropes aboard a vessel'. Anyone who says that isn't familiar with a tiller rope, manrope, bell rope or the roping on sails."

If you don't care where you're going, you can't get lost.

Life is an Ocean but it ends at the shore...you may not see me tomorrow.

I'm here for a good time...not a long time.

Re: What is Your Favorite Quote?

It seems our cruising life has generated a few aphorisms, as well as learning a few proverbs:

From the bulkhead of a small cruising boat in Tasmania:

"Mackerel skies and mare's tails means soon tall ships will wear short sails."

""Who shuns the calm has forgotten the storm"

"Today's misfortune is tomorrow's adventure." (That one is mine, and the following one is Jim's...)

"You can not be forever young; but you can be forever immature."

Ann
